Fire incidents
Dear Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service,
Please could you supply details of incidents which attract 8 and
8+appliances with the following information for the last 5 years:
Date, time, appliances and callsigns, specialist appliances (and
what this is), officers and callsigns, Incident end time, type of
incident, location, type of premises i.e. hospital, outcome i.e.
fire or secondary fire.
For each incident please could you supply the stop message.
If cost prohibits any of the full information please remove any
section that would allow the request to be made.
Yours faithfully,
R Gray
Dear R Gray
Thank you for your query with regard to incidents that attract 8 and
8+appliances over the last 5 years at Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service
(SFRS).
Your request asks SFRS to supply details of these incidents including
appliances, specialist appliances and Officers. Could I clarify with you
whether specialist appliances and officers should be included within the 8
or more appliances?
Could I also clarify whether the criteria of 8 or more appliances applies
to the duration of the incident or at any one time during the incident?
Some incidents are protracted and relief crews will be called, this can
take the total number of appliances attending to 8 or more over the
duration of the incident but not necessarily at the same time.
Yours sincerely

8 + pumping appliances or pump ladders , TL, HP's would be fine
Could I also clarify whether the criteria of 8 or more appliances applies
to the duration of the incident or at any one time during the incident?
Some incidents are protracted and relief crews will be called, this can
take the total number of appliances attending to 8 or more over the
duration of the incident but not necessarily at the same time.
You don't need to include relief crews if they are taking over from an appliance, so if 6 appliances require 6 reliefs this doesn't need to be included
Yours sincerely,
R Gray
Dear R Gray
Thank you for your enquiry with regard to incidents that attract 8 and
8+appliances. Please find attached a spreadsheet that shows:
· Date and time,
· Total number of appliances,
· Call sign,
· appliance type, (including officers and call signs),
· Stop time,
· Incident type,
· Outcome,
· Location descriptions,
· Premise type.
The spreadsheet shows incidents from 25 March 2012 to December 2014.
Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) changed its Command and Control
System in September 2011; from this date to 25 March 2012, SFRS
experienced difficulties with the system, and records from this period are
not easily retrievable. It is estimated that there were approximately 80
incidents from this period that may have attracted 8 appliances or more.
To confirm this, each incident would need to be retrieved from the system,
reviewed to ensure that the incident did not include relief crews, matched
to an address and other incident information. It is estimated that this
would take approximately 10 minutes per incident, plus approximately half
an hour to set up the query.
This equates to more than 14 hours, and when added to the amount of time
already spent collating the information within the spreadsheet (8 hours
currently), the cost of compliance with your request would exceed the
appropriate costs limit under section 12 of the Freedom of information Act
2000. This is currently £450.
Information regarding incidents prior to September 2011 are contained
within the previous Command and Control system, and would be equally
difficult to interrogate to enable us to retrieve incidents of 8
appliances or more. Officers estimate that it would take well in excess
of 8 hours to interrogate the data from December 2009 to September 2011,
adding further to the cost of compliance.
If you are unhappy with the way your request for information has been
handled, you can request an internal review by writing to Assistant Chief
Fire Officer Louise McKenzie, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, St
Michael’s Street, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, SY1 2HJ.
