Figures underpinning claim that pupils behave better at academies or free schools

The request was successful.

Dear Department for Education,

The Telegraph printed at article saying the DfE had released an analysis of Ofsted statistics which showed that pupils in academies and free schools were more likely to have outstanding behaviour.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/edu...

The Telegraph provided no link to the evidence and it is not on the news section of the DfE website. I should be grateful if you could make public the press release you sent to the Telegraph.

I should also be grateful if you could provide the figures that underpinned the analysis. The analysis should be broken down into sponsored academies, converter academies, foundation schools, free schools and maintained schools. It should also make it clear whether the Ofsted data which was used is for all state schools as judged at their last inspection or only those state schools which have been inspected under the new Ofsted framework.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

J Downs

Dear J Downs,
RE: Freedom of Information request - Figures underpinning claim that pupils behave better at academies or free schools

Thank you for your request for information, which was received on 29th July 2014, reference number: 2014/0053961. Your request
was as follows:

“The Telegraph printed at article saying the DfE had released an analysis of Ofsted statistics which showed that pupils in
academies and free schools were more likely to have outstanding
behaviour.http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/edu...
The Telegraph provided no link to the evidence and it is not on the news section of the DfE website.  I should be grateful if
you could make public the press release you sent to the Telegraph.
I should also be grateful if you could provide the figures that underpinned the analysis.  The analysis should be broken down
into sponsored academies, converter academies, foundation schools, free schools and maintained schools.  It should also make it
clear whether the Ofsted data which was used is for all state schools as judged at their last inspection or only those state
schools which have been inspected under the new Ofsted framework.”

I have dealt with your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (“the Act”).

The press notice that the Telegraph based their article on and the requested data is attached.

The press notice draws on the fact that a higher proportion of academies and free schools (39%) were rated outstanding for
behaviour by Ofsted than local authority schools (31%). It also shows that behaviour is good or outstanding in 92% of all
schools.

The data includes the most recent inspection outcomes for state-funded schools as at 31 March 2014, covering inspection
outcomes between September 2006 -  March 2014. Please note that the status of the schools is of 31 March 2014, which means that
schools may have received their rating under a different status. The data is published on Ofsted’s website as “Latest official
statistics: Maintained schools and academies inspections and outcomes”:
