Dear Avon and Somerset Constabulary,

Please supply the following information in relation to the policing of the EDL demonstration and the anti-EDL counter-demonstration in central Bristol on Saturday 14 July 2012, per your duty under the FoI Act:

(i) How much did the whole policing operation cost, including overtime payments, hire of any equipment, any pre-event intelligence gathering, and any other associated activity;

(ii) Specifically what was the cost and source of the numerous mobile cordon walls;

(iii) How many police officers and other police employees were deployed in total for this operation;

(iv) How many other - and which - police forces supplied personnel, equipment, animals or other items for this policing operation;

(v) Please provide the names, ranks and stations of those police officers acting in the capacity of Gold, Silver and Bronze throughout the policing operation;

(vi) How many arrests were made and for what were they for;

(vii) What non-standard issue weapons were available for use during this operation;

(viii) Given the large number of non-A&S officers involved, when and how were officers briefed?

I write in connection with your request for information dated 15^th July
concerning EDL demonstration in Bristol on 14^th July.

Your request for information has now been considered and the information
asked for is contained below.

Specifically you asked “Please supply the following information in
relation to the policing of the EDL demonstration and the anti-EDL
counter-demonstration in central Bristol on Saturday 14 July 2012, per
your duty under the FoI Act:

    
(i) How much did the whole policing operation cost, including overtime
payments, hire of any equipment, any pre-event intelligence gathering, and
any other associated activity;

This figure is evolving as final costs are received, but currently stands
at £495,000.
    
(ii) Specifically what was the cost and source of the numerous mobile
cordon walls;
Nil Cost, they are already owned by the Constabulary.

(iii) How many police officers and other police employees were deployed in
total for this operation;
1136 Officers and Staff
    
(iv) How many other - and which - police forces supplied personnel,
equipment, animals or other items for this policing operation;

16 for offences of going equipped, going equipped for damage, found on
enclosed premises, affray, racially aggravated section 5 public order,
Breach of Sec 60 Refused to remove face covering, assault police (x2),
violent disorder (x2), section 3 public order (x2), drunk and disorderly
(x2), theft and common assault.

  
(vii) What non-standard issue weapons were available for use during this
operation;
None
    
(viii) Given the large number of non-A&S officers involved, when and how
were officers briefed?

There was a Commanders’ Briefing on the 10^th of July and then a number of
structured briefings for all staff on the morning of the march and
throughout the day.
