Expenditure on parking provision for councillors

The request was successful.

Dear Liverpool City Council,

It is my understanding that city councillors do not have to pay for parking in the city.

I would like to know how much this provision costs to supply, including the payment, by the council, of any fines or penalties incurred with respects to parking.

Please provide the annual cost of providing councillors with free parking in the city in each of the years 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013.

Please itemise the costs for each of the years, i.e. the costs of: providing permits; reimbursing fees incurred by using private car parks; reimbursing any fines; etc.

Yours faithfully,

Thomas Byrne

Response from my councillor, Rosy Jolly on this subject.

"In terms of parking passes for members the annual cost of the passes is £30,000. The passes which members can use on council business in any council car park vastly reduces any claims members make for parking and approx. 70 members out of the 90 have them. I personally think that it is not unreasonable for members to be able to use the car parks when on council business as you would if it were for any other work purpose.

...

With budget cuts of 32 million you will appreciate that 30,000 is really a very small amount in an overall budget of about 1 billion. In addition members vote on the budget proposals as a whole and not on specific items with in it."

I note that £30,000 was the amount cut from the budget of Wavertree Library and the One Stop Shop that same budget.

Dear Karen Hellon,

Thank you for the response. Please could you provide data to satisfy all parts of my question.

To clarify, I would like to know:

- the annual cost of providing councillors with free parking for each of the stated years: 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013;

- the total cost of paying fines or penalties incurred by councillors in each of the stated years;

- the total amount in costs incurred by councillors using private car parks in each of those years.

Yours sincerely,

Thomas Byrne
