Expenditure

Roedd y cais yn llwyddiannus.

Dear Manchester Metropolitan University,

Could you tell me if Manchester Metropolitan University ever paid or made any contribution towards the costs of flying to either the USA and or Canada for students and or staff in each of the past 5 financial years to date;
The location where students and or staff went to eg; New York, Washington DC, Toronto etc; The dates of each visit; The reasons why staff and or student had to visit either USA and or Canada; The robust steps that the University takes to ensure that any costs they incurr are the best value for money for the taxpayers; The name and job title that signs off for these trips

Yours faithfully,
Emma Smith

FOI, Manchester Metropolitan University

Dear Ms Smith

The University can confirm that it is unable to answer your request
because an attempt to provide this information would exceed the cost limit
for having to comply with a request under the Fee Regulations.  The cost
limit is currently set at £450/18 hours.  This is because the University
does not record/monitor the specific information you have requested.
Travel costs are not monitored or categorised by the University by
destination and it is impossible for the University to isolate these
specific costs from any other travel costs, within the cost limit for
complying with a request under the Act.  Consequently, under s12 of the
Act, the University is not obliged to respond to your request.

However, in order to assist you as far as possible, the following
information is available:

* The University’s Business Travel policy is published and available on
the University website at:
[1]http://www.finance.mmu.ac.uk/uploads/35/...
* The University operates a devolved budget and the relevant budget
holders are responsible for authorising expenditure.
* Staff visits to the USA / Canada for research conferences are usually
funded through external project funding rather than by the University.
* Student visits to the USA / Canada are usually placement related and
therefore paid for by the student, not by the University.
* Any other travel paid for by the University is dealt with in
accordance with the University’s policies and regulations which are
published on the MMU website.

If you are unhappy with the service you have received in relation to your
request and wish to make a complaint or request a review of this decision,
you should write to Ms S Shanab, Head of the Legal Department, All Saints
Building, Manchester, M15 6BH.  If you are not content with the outcome of
your complaint, you may apply directly to the Information Commissioner for
a decision.  Generally, the ICO cannot make a decision unless you have
exhausted the complaints procedure provided by the Legal Department.  The
Information Commissioner can be contacted at: The Information
Commissioner’s Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9
5AF.

If you have any further queries, please feel free to contact us.
