UCL’s Medical School is a division within the Faculty of Medical Sciences
(FMS) - one of four faculties that sit within UCL’s School of Life and

The Medical School draws on staff from other divisions within FMS, as well
as the other three faculties within UCL’s SLMS department.
The other three faculties within SLMS are the (1) Faculty of Brain

Sciences.
For question 1, could you please clarify whether the statistics you are
requesting are:
1. for staff who report specifically to UCL’s Medical School division; or
2. for the entire FMS division; or
3. for all faculties and divisions that sit within UCL’s SLMS department
********CLARIFICATION********

Dear K. Sharma
Thank you for your Freedom of Information request of 11^th August 2021 and
clarification of 23^rd September 2021. Apologies for the delay in
responding to your request.
We have completed the compilation of information in response to your
request for the following information:
1. A breakdown (% or number) of all faculty staff members from your
medical school in 2020-2021, broken down by ethnicity and gender.
Ethnicity groups can be presented as White, Mixed or Multiple ethnic
groups, Asian or Asian British, Black, African, Caribbean or Black
British, or other.
Please could this data could be stratified according to these three
groups:
Senior leadership team (however your faculty defines this e.g. Deans, Vice
Deans, Associate Deans, Heads of School) Clinical Faculty Non-Clinical
Faculty
2. A breakdown (% or number) of undergraduate and postgraduate (if
applicable) medical students in 2020-2021, broken down by ethnicity
and gender. Ethnicity groups can be presented as White British, Black
Afro-Caribbean, Indian etc.
You clarified that:
o For question 1, the statistics you are requesting are for staff who
report specifically to UCL’s Medical School division.
We can confirm that we do hold some information of the description
specified in your request and this information is provided in the attached
spreadsheet at requested.
Please note:
o The students in question 2 are all undergraduate – UCL does not have a
postgraduate medical degree.
o There are three possible categories for gender (SEXID in HESA
[1]https://www.hesa.ac.uk/collection/c19051...) and UCL has
collected data in this way since about 2019.
Whilst UCL is committed to openness and transparency, we are also mindful
of our obligations under the Data Protection regime, and therefore take
steps to anonymise data before it is released. We therefore adopt the
following approach when releasing statistic that relate to people, to
prevent unauthorised disclosure of information that relates to
individuals:
• Numbers of individuals are rounded to the nearest multiple
of five – so if the figure is 102 individuals, this is rounded to 100. Any
number lower than 2.5 is rounded to zero.
• Percentages that are based on a group of 22 individuals or
less are not provided, and this includes requests for percentile
information about marks.
• Averages based on 7 or fewer individuals are not provided.
We have identified that there is a risk of the identification of
underlying individuals in the information that you have requested. We have
therefore applied rounding to the number of individuals to the nearest
multiple of five. The information withheld is personal information of
third parties, or, if linked with other personal identifiers in the public
domain, would be likely to become personal data. This information has been
withheld under Section 40(2) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA)
by virtue of Section 40(3A)(i).
Section 40(2) of the FOIA allows a public authority to withhold
information under the FOIA where (i) the requested information is personal
data relating to someone other than the requester and (ii) its disclosure
would breach any of the Data Protection principles. In this case, we
believe that the requested information could relate to and identify
individuals and therefore would be personal data. The disclosure of these
personal data would not be within the reasonable expectations of the
individuals concerned and it would be unfair to do so; this therefore
breaches the first Data Protection principle.
As the Section 40(2) exemption is an absolute one, there is no need to
conduct a public interest test.
You are free to use any information supplied for your own use, including
for non-commercial research purposes. The information may also be used for
the purposes of news reporting. However, any other type of re-use, for
example by publishing or issuing copies to the public, will require the
permission of the copyright owner.
If you are unhappy with our response to your request and wish to make a
complaint or request a review of our decision, please email
[2][email address]. Emails should include the words ‘Internal
Review’ in the subject and be marked For the Attention of the
Vice-President (Operations), alternatively you should write to:

Please note, complaints and requests for internal review received more
than two months after the initial decision will not be handled.

You should do this within two months of our final decision.
