Empty workspace due to WFH

Hello,

My name is Daniel Jaines and I'm a Local Democracy Reporter at The Lincolnite.

I am sending this request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 to ask for the following information:

A. The proportion of council workspace currently sitting unused due to staff working from home
i. Please provide this in both sq floor space and
ii. Percentage of overall floor space

B. How many rooms are empty due to council staff working from home?

C. How many buildings are empty due to council staff working from home?

D. The number of staff that are currently WFH?

E. How much money is currently being spent by the council heating/powering this empty space?
i. If you cannot provide a full figure, please provide an estimate
ii. Please break down into the different bills (such as electric, gas, water etc)

F. Please can you confirm if the council is considering selling any of this property due to its lack of use and staff WFH.
i. Please provide address details for any confirmed property being considered

Dear Mr Jaines,

We refer to previous correspondence regarding your request for information
relating to: Empty workspace due to WFH.

The information is given below:

A. The proportion of council workspace currently sitting unused due to
staff working from home i. Please provide this in both sq. floor space: At
Sleaford, Lafford Terrace 2000m2 however this is misleading given the
configuration of the offices and not all is available as working space and
ii. Percentage of overall floor space: Based on 40% being occupied at any
one time, this would equate to 60%
B. How many rooms are empty due to council staff working from home? This
is variable and no precise answer is possible. Generally, colleagues work
in the office 40% of the time but the level at which they are occupied by
teams varies considerably depending upon activities taking place at that
time. With different configurations of colleagues working in any one
office space at different times, it’s not as simple as giving numbers of
empty offices, when staff do work from the office, they are able to book
desks and may sit in isolation or in the company of others.

C. How many buildings are empty due to council staff working from home?
Nil

D. The number of staff that are currently WFH? Varies on a day-to-day
basis within a policy of supporting colleagues to work agile on a 60% home
and 40% office basis. However the numbers who attend the offices varies
considerably on a day-to-day basis. NKDC are currently undertaking a
consultation exercise on our future policy.

E. How much money is currently being spent by the council heating/powering
this empty space? None, all our rooms are being used at least some of the
time. Additionally, it is important to note that most of the Lafford
Terrace Sleaford complex heating provision is provided at no cost as a
benefit of an arrangement with the Sleaford Renewable Energy Plant to
divert surplus heat from its operations to a number of public buildings.
Consequently, most radiator heat and hot water are provided at nil cost.
