Regarding your request for information under the Freedom of Information
Act 2000: Ref: foi/207/10

"Empty commercial properties"

Please find set out below the information in response to the above
request:

"BHCC don't keep a list of commercial properties. By their very nature
(i.e. the fact that the owners / landlords are generally seeking tenants)
information on empty commercial properties is generally available through
the standard channels i.e. commercial agents / auction houses, and we can
only suggest that the enquirer tries these avenues. The council also has
a commercial property database on it's website which has a number of
properties listed thereon.

BHCC don't have any further information that would help with this."

Regarding your request for information under the Freedom of Information
Act 2000: Ref: foi/208/10

Please find set out below the information in response to the above
request:

"Both 60 Middle Street ( the old Hippodrome) and 57 Queens Road are
privately owned and we do not have any details of the ownership. If the
titles are registered the information can be obtained by anyone for a
small fee from the Land registry at Portsmouth.

The old ( Wholesale ) market building in Circus Street is owned by
Brighton & Hove City Council. The entire site together with the Brighton
University Annexe on the Circus street frontage is identified for a joint
mixed development project. A preferred developer has been identified for
the project following the marketing of the site.

I am not clear how much history is being sought on the site but there is
some history of the site in The Encyclopaedia of Brighton by T. Carder.
My records indicate that the building was officially opened in 1937 as the
wholesale Fruit, Flower and Vegetable Market.. It was tenanted by some 29
wholesalers and additional space was provided for daily letting to Market
Gardeners. Amenities included parking for wholesalers and retailers, a
canteen, warehousing and storage facilities. The market served an area
from Seaford to Littlehampton and as far north as Crawley. During its
heyday the market was extremely busy and there was considerable congestion
around the site.

There were concerns about illegal trading in nearby streets in the past
which gave rise to claims about unfair competition because traders in the
streets with no overheads were accused of putting the market traders in
jeopardy because the street traders were often selling poached goods!

In 1960 the fish market which had been housed on the beach was relocated
to a building within the wholesale market.

The wholesale market continued to function on this site until relocated to
the new wholesale market on the Hollingbury Industrial Estate about 7
years ago."
