Dear Department for Transport,

Thank you for your acknowledgement and providing the reference: P0018141

For the sake of simplicity I'd like to revise my request slightly, I'm wanting emails with any of the following words within the text of the email itself:
drone
unmanned
gatwick

Those 3 words I think would suffice to find the data I'm after.

Yours faithfully,

I Hudson

Dear FOI-ADVICE-TEAM-DFT,

Following your request for clarification can the request be as following:

Date range: 19th Dec 2018 to 31st Jan 2019
Scope: Whole Department
Search words: (drone or unmanned) and Gatwick

So either drone or unmanned in an e-mail that also mentions Gatwick.

Yours sincerely,

I Hudson

Dear FOI-ADVICE-TEAM-DFT,

Given the request is generating over 70,000 emails can you see if there's a manageable amount of emails for this more specific criteria:

Date range: 19th Dec 2018 to 31st Dec 2018
Scope: Whole Department
Search words: (drone or unmanned) and Gatwick

If this still results in too many emails, please then check the following:
Date range: 19th Dec 2018 to 31st Dec 2018
Scope: Whole Department
Search words: (drone or unmanned) and Gatwick and legislation

Yours sincerely,

I Hudson

Dear I Hudson,

I am contacting you in relation to your Freedom of Information request
(ref: F0018220).

You asked for emails with the following search criteria:

•       Date range: 19/12/18 to 31/12/18 Search words: (drone or unmanned)
and Gatwick If this results in too many emails, please use these search
words: (drone or unmanned) and Gatwick and legislation.

The search returned with the following number of documents:

For the first search:
Date range: 19/12/18 to 31/12/18 Search words: (drone or unmanned) and
Gatwick
Returned 79,295 results which is the same number as for your previous
request.

For the second search:
Date range: 19/12/18 to 31/12/18 Search words: (drone or unmanned) and
Gatwick and legislation
Returned 31,952 results.

These numbers would again place the Department under a disproportionate
administrative burden. To reduce the numbers drastically it would be
helpful if you could be more specific in your request. It would also be
helpful if you could tell us what information you are looking for as this
would increase the chances of returning a more manageable amount of
information.

Please note, I cannot guarantee that any exemptions of the FOIA will not
apply to any future requests for information.

Kind regards

Dear FOI-ADVICE-TEAM-DFT,

ref: F0018220

I'm interested in emails relating specifically to the Gatwick drone incident, I'd hoped the search terms we'd tried already would narrow it down.

I suspect this following amendment should target a few emails on the incident.

Date range: 19/12/18 to 31/12/18
Search words: (drone or unmanned) and (AUDS or Skyperion or Aeroscope)

I Hudson

Dear FOI-ADVICE-TEAM-DFT,

4 months ago I asked for my request to be dealt with by narrowed down search terms but I've had no reply, I've waited a long while keeping in mind the COVID situation but could you deal with this query now that it's been going on several months.

My last contact was:

Dear I Hudson,

Thank you for your email of the 12th June.

I have looked into your request and it appears that you did not receive an email from the Department in March 2020 responding to your email of the 7th Feb. I have pasted the email below:

'Dear I Hudson,

I am contacting you in relation to your Freedom of Information request

You asked for emails with the following search criteria:

• Date range: 19/12/18 to 31/12/18 Search words: (drone or unmanned) and (AUDS or Skyperion or Aeroscope)
The search returned with the following number of documents:

The search returned 2271 results.

These numbers would again place the Department under a disproportionate administrative burden. To reduce the numbers drastically it would be helpful if you could be more specific in your request. It would also be helpful if you could tell us what information you are looking for as this would increase the chances of returning a more manageable amount of information.

Dear Ivan,

I am contacting you in relation to Freedom of Information request (ref: F0018220).

Here we had narrowed the request to:

• Date range: 19/12/18 to 31/12/18 Search words: (drone or unmanned) and (AUDS or Skyperion or Aeroscope)
You've noted that the search returned with the following number of documents - 2271 results.

Given these very unique words and the fact staff are typically off over Christmas, this seems an unusually high number is your request counting all the replies in the e-mail chain as a new result even though it's part of a chain and as such is really a single e-mail?

To help check the accuracy of this search, and to help me make my request more specific, could you provide the first 10 E-mail subjects and the e-mail date for the following:
19/12/18 to 31/12/18 Search words: (drone or unmanned) and (AUDS)
19/12/18 to 31/12/18 Search words: (drone or unmanned) and (Skyperion)
19/12/18 to 31/12/18 Search words: (drone or unmanned) and (Aeroscope)

Given I just want the subject and date for this request and we're keeping it down to 30 e-mails in total I take it this can be completed as an initial step?

Yours faithfully,

I Hudson

FOI-ADVICE-TEAM-DFT, Department for Transport

Dear I Hudson,

Thank you for your email of the 15th June. I would like to clarify exactly what information you are asking the Department to now provide. Are you asking us to provide a list of the first 10 email subjects and dates from each of the 3 searches that were carried out as per your search criteria i.e. a list of 30 email subjects / dates in total?

If not, can you please confirm exactly what information about the previous search which returned 2271 results you are interested in?

Dear Ivan,

ref: F0018220

1. 19/12/18 to 31/12/18 Search words: (drone or unmanned) and (AUDS)
2. 19/12/18 to 31/12/18 Search words: (drone or unmanned) and (Skyperion)
3. 19/12/18 to 31/12/18 Search words: (drone or unmanned) and (Aeroscope)

As per your request for clarification, I want for now, just the title and date of the first 10 emails that match individually the 3 criteria above so 3 queries and 10 details in each case.

So I should end up with just the titles and dates for the first 10 emails discussing AUDS , then the same for Skyperion and finally Aeroscope.

At this stage I just want enough information to establish the queries being attempted are bringing back relevant data.

Yours faithfully,

I Hudson

Dear Ivan,

Could you confirm you're progressing with the FOI ref: F0018220 where clarification was provided a number of weeks since?

Dear FOI-ADVICE-TEAM-DFT,

ref: F0018220

A quick question to your response today, are the email matches, given I've asked for the first 10 in each case, in chronological order? So can I assume there were no matching emails before 23/12/2018?

Yours sincerely,

I Hudson
