Kathryn Gee,

Dear Freddy

I refer to your recent request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000
regarding Economics applications for 2021 entry. The College’s responses
to each of your questions are given below, in bold (your numbering).
Please note that EU is no longer a separate category for admissions
purposes and so applicants are broken down into home and overseas only.

1. The number of successful application for 2021 entry of economics.

We do not hold this information as the admissions round is ongoing

2. ECAA score for each applicant. Converged and raw marks
3. Average ECAA scores for applicants.

Individual scores for each applicant cannot be given as to do so would
involve the release of personal data, which is exempt under section 40(2)
of the Act - the processing of this information for disclosure under FOI
would be unlawful or unfair and contravene principle (a) of the GDPR.
Instead, the range and mean are given.

+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
|ECAA part | All |Home applications|Overseas applications|
|----------------+---------------+-----------------+---------------------|
|  |Range |Mean|Range |Mean|Range |Mean |

|2 reported marks|3 to 10 |6.3 |3 to 10 |6.2 |4 to 10 |6.4 |
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+

3. Numbers of interviews and pre interview rejections.

Twenty-two valid applications led to interview - 12 home applicants and 10
overseas. Thirteen valid applications were rejected prior to interview – 5
home applicants and 8 overseas.

I hope you find this information useful.

Dear Kathryn Gee,

Thank you for those statistics. Since the application round is over, I had a few questions under the Freedom of Information GDPR act.

1) How many economics offers were made?
2) What was the split between UK and international?
3) How many of these offerholders were pooled?
4) What was the average interview score for unsuccessful interviewees?
5) What was the average interview scores for offerholders?
6) How many Magdalene application for economics were given offers at other colleges through the pool?

Thanks a lot and I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,
Freddie Andrew

Kathryn Gee,

Dear Freddie

I refer to your follow-up request under the Freedom of Information Act
2000 regarding economics applications to Magdalene College, made on 12
February 2021.

The admissions round is still ongoing – it will not be complete until all
admissions decisions have been made, normally towards the end of August
for admission in September/October.

We have recently received updated advice from the Office of
Intercollegiate Services, Cambridge University, regarding requests for
admissions data in the current admissions round. As a result the College
has reviewed its policy and consider the information you have requested to
be exempt as explained below.

The information requested, insofar as it is held (noting that the current
undergraduate applications cycle is ongoing), is exempt under section
36(2)(c) of the Act because its disclosure would be likely to prejudice
the effective conduct of public affairs, in this case the integrity of the
College’s applications and admissions process which form a fundamental
part of its mission as an educational institution. (As the information
requested is statistical in nature, the opinion of the qualified person
did not need to be sought for this application of section 36.) The College
considers that the disclosure of detailed statistics about applications
made within the current cycle would be likely to prejudice the notion of a
fair and confidential admissions process whereby each applicant has the
same information at their disposal and partial granular data is not
disclosed to specific members of the public while the process is ongoing.
As this is a qualified exemption, the College has considered whether, in
all the circumstances of the case, the public interest in maintaining the
exemption outweighs the public interest in disclosing the information. The
College considers that, while some people might have an understandable
private interest in these statistics, there is no genuine public interest
in them when set against the extensive statistical information available
about previous admissions cycles published at
[1]https://www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.u... statistics, coupled
with the prevailing public interest in maintaining a level playing field
in terms of the information available to all applicants. Note that
information about the College’s undergraduate admissions process can be
found at [2]https://www.magd.cam.ac.uk/undergraduate .

The College’s complaints procedure provides for an internal review of the
decisions regarding this response if you are dissatisfied with it.  You
should let me know if you wish to use it, letting me know your reasons for
dissatisfaction and any other matters to which the College should have
regard.  The review will be conducted by another officer of the College
who was not involved in responding to the original request.

You have a right to apply to the Information Commissioner for a decision
whether, in any specified respect, your request to the College for
information has been dealt with in accordance with the requirements of the
Freedom of Information Act.  Details may be found on the Information
Commissioner’s website at [3]www.ico.gov.uk.

Kind regards

Kathryn
