DWP policy on major surgery patients

The request was successful.

Dear Department for Work and Pensions,

For some unknown reason, my wife was advised not to sign off and put in for DLA or whatever they're calling it this week. I cannot sign off and put in for carers allowance until this is done and dusted, so I have to continue to sign on. Until such time as she is declared MEDICALLY FIT FOR WORK I am her full time carer therefore could not take a job if one was offered me on a plate! However, to fall within the rules I have to carry out jobsearches and apply for jobs, even if I have to turn the job down at the interview stage because they're not prepared to wait until mid-July for me to become available to start! With all that said, I require clarification of how someone who has just had MAJOR ANATOMICAL ADJUSTMENT can be advised that she is fit for work by someone who is NOT MEDICALLY QUALIFIED?

Yours faithfully,

James Moore

Dear Operations FOI Requests,

Thank you for the information, however I would like to clarify: the DWP had not, at the time the staff member gave the advice, had sight of any documents or assessments except for the hospital discharge form. To date, no assessment by ATOS has been carried out, and we have not been informed of any approach to our GP by the DWP or any of its sister agencies. I ask again, and to further clarify: we are not talking about disability, we are talking about post-operative incapacity and outpatient recuperation, how does someone not qualified in any shape or form to make such determination, decide that someone in such condition is fit for work? I feel this may have to go to some sort of hearing, as what has occurred is extremely irregular going by the information you have given here.

Yours sincerely,

James Moore
