Drop-out rates

Dan Perry made this Rhyddid Gwybodaeth request to University of Northampton

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

Roedd y cais yn llwyddiannus.

Dear Freedom of Information Officer,

I am writing to request information under the Freedom of
Information Act 2000. In order to assist you with this request, I am outlining my query as specifically as possible.

1) How many students have permanently dropped out of their courses at any Level (year) of their course in each of the last five years? I would like these figures broken down by the course they were studying. (For example, 14 students dropped out of the Journalism BA (Hons) course in 2008.)

2) If possible, could you also state what percentage the drop out rate was for each course in each of the last five years? (For example, 8% of students studying the Journalism BA (Hons) course dropped out in 2008.)

3) What were the overall drop out rates from the university in each of the last five years? (For example, 14% of students dropped out of university in 2008.)

I would be interested in any information held by your organisation regarding my request. I understand that I do not have to specify particular files or documents and that it is the department’s responsibility to provide the information I require.

If my request is denied in whole or in part, I ask that you justify all deletions by reference to specific exemptions of the act. I will also expect you to release all non-exempt material. I reserve the right to appeal your decision to withhold any information or to charge excessive fees.

I would be grateful if you could confirm in writing/by email that you have received this request. I look forward to your response within 20 working days, as outlined by the statute.

Regards,

Dan Perry

helpful if you could quote this reference on any correspondence relating

Under the legislation we have 20 working days to provide you with this

Dear Mr Perry

The information you seek is readily available from the Higher Education
Statistics Agency (HESA) and the University is therefore exempted under
Section 21(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 from having to supply
it.

However in this instance the University has decided to provide the data
you requested. Might I offer the suggestion that it might have been to
your advantage to contact a central organisation, such as HESA, directly
rather than send requests to separate Universities? HESA would have been
able to provide a consistent response throughout and provided you with the
information with a uniformity of presentation.

Please find attached the information provided in response to your recent
request made under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

I hope the University has made it's response in a clear and constructive
manner but please get in touch again if you require any further
clarification, using this address. If you consider the University has
handled your request unfairly you are entitled to follow the process set
out in our standard advice on the University's Freedom of Information
Complaints Procedure (attached).

Yours Sincerely

Phil Oakman
