Details of 80 credit modules on undergraduate higher education courses

Please could you provide me with a list of all your undergraduate higher education courses which contain a single 80 SCQF credit module.
For each 80-credit module you deliver, please give the SCQF level and provide me with the module descriptor or curriculum document which lists how the notional learning hours are allocated to the module. Please could you give me the mode of delivery and also the learning outcomes, aims, objectives and modes of assessment for that module. If there are any essays/dissertations etc. please give the word count for those.

I refer to your email of 5 June 2019 requesting information relating to 80 credit modules.

Your request has now been considered under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002, ‘the Act’.

Please could you provide me with a list of all your undergraduate higher education courses which contain a single 80 SCQF credit module.
For each 80-credit module you deliver, please give the SCQF level and provide me with the module descriptor or curriculum document which lists how the notional learning hours are allocated to the module. Please could you give me the mode of delivery and also the learning outcomes, aims, objectives and modes of assessment for that module. If there are any essays/dissertations etc. please give the word count for those.

Three courses listed below relate to courses on the Dentistry BDS, which is classed as an undergraduate degree but is only open to graduate applicants.

The BDS Programme is structured slightly differently to other conventional University degree programmes. Within our programme we have teaching courses which carry no weighting and assessment course which are weighted (credits attached). We are structured in this manner as the students are required to utilise all teaching, from all courses, during examinations. During any examination students can be assessed on any teaching they have received up to that point in the programme.

It is difficult to be completely accurate with learning hours given the amount of teaching provided to the students which they can use to successfully complete examinations however for the clinical / practical assessment courses noted below we would highlight the following areas.

1.Clinical Skills Teaching – ranges from approx. 50 hours per academic year to 300 hours per academic year (Clinical Skills teaching decreases as a student moves through the programme). This is based on the approximate number of clinical teaching sessions (which are around 4 hours long)
2.Clinical Treatment sessions - ranges from approx. 85 hours per academic year to 450 hours per academic year (Clinical treatment sessions increase as a student moves through the programme). This is based on the approximate number of clinical treatment sessions timetabled (which are around 4 hours long)
3.Teaching from across all courses up to the point at which the exam is sat – ranges from approx. 50 hours per academic year to 150 hours per academic year.
4.Private student time – we would envisage ours students having to put in at least 10 hours per week, totalling approx. 300 - 360 hours a year.

BDS 80 Credit Assessment Courses.

DE3037 – Dental OSCE: Objective Structured Clinical Examination. SCQF Level 9
The Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE) consists of a number of stations designed to test a range of competencies such as history taking, practical procedures, patient management, communication skills etc. They take place during Years 2, 3 and 4 of the BDS Programme. Each OSCE consists of a minimum of 10 stations, each of a minimum of 5 minutes duration.
The OSCE is designed to assess a wide range of skills across the learning outcomes within the GDC document 'Preparing for Practice'.

DE4038 – Dental OSCE: Objective Structured Clinical Examination. SCQF Level 9 / 10

DE5039 – Dental ISCE – Integrated Structured Clinical Examination. SCQF Level 10
The Integrated Structured Clinical Examination (ISCE) is similar to an OSCE, but is made up of integrated stations based around a clinical case. This allows testing of skills similar to those encountered in dental practice, whilst keeping the assessment standardised. The ISCE normally consists of 4 main stations each with 3 substations. The ISCE is designed to assess a wide range of skills across the learning outcomes within the GDC document 'Preparing for Practice'.

Learning outcomes for the BDS Programme are stated within the General Dental Council document, Preparing for Practice.

Should you be dissatisfied with this response, you have the right under the Act to request a review. A request for review must be made within 40 working days of the date of this reply. It must include your name and address for correspondence and specify the request for information and the grounds for dissatisfaction with the decision.
