Deaths for any reason within 28 days of a Covid-19 vaccination

Public Health England Nid oedd gan y wybodaeth y gofynnwyd amdani.

Dear Public Health England,

Please provide total number of 'deaths for any reason within 28 days of a Covid-19 vaccination' in England. If possible, please show this information for hospital, care home and at home deaths. I do not require proof the deaths were related to the vaccine or any other cause, I simply require total numbers of those who are now deceased within 28 days of vaccination. This should cover the period 8th December 2020 to today's date, 29th March 2021.

Please do not refer me to the MHRA as their yellow card system only collects reported vaccine reactions, which will not show all those who have died in England within 28 days of a Covid-19 vaccine, but those deaths reported via the yellow card system within 7 days of vaccination, which is an entirely different statistic.

Thank you

Yours faithfully,

Tricia McGuigan

Dear Tricia McGuigan,

We acknowledge receipt of your email and request for information, which will be treated as a request for information under statutory access legislation.

Please note that requests under the Freedom of Information Act and the Environmental Information Regulations (EIRs) will receive a response within 20 working days from the day following the date of receipt of your request.

If the request is for your personal data, your request has been handled as a data subject access request (SAR) under Article 15 of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), then we will respond within one month of the receipt of the request.

Public Health England (PHE) is responsible for providing guidance and advice to government and front-line services for all aspects of public health. It is a designated Category 1 responder organisation under the Civil Contingency Act and this specifically includes the COVID-19 response, providing clinical expertise and wider public health advice and guidance across national and local government, the NHS and third sector. As such, you may experience delays when making statutory information access requests during the pandemic.

We will aim to address all requests promptly and within the required response timeframes. However when we are unable to meet the response timeframe we will keep requesters updated on a revised expected timescale for a response to their request. The Information Commissioner recognises this position in its recent guidance, see link: https://ico.org.uk/global/data-protectio...

Dear FOI Team,

Thank you for your response, however you have not answered my request. I specifically requested the total number of deaths 'for any reason within 28 days of vaccination'. I did not request deaths attributed to an adverse reaction to a vaccination as alluded to in your reply.

I hereby request that your department respond to my specific question, which I will clarify to assist your understanding. How many people have died in England within 28 days of receiving a vaccination between 8th December 2020 to 29th March 2021.

Yours sincerely,

Tricia McGuigan

I would respond stating that PH Scotland are able to provide this data, therefore it seems unlikely PHE do not hold it, rather they do not know where to look. PHE hold a record of all people that have been vaccinated, this data can be cross referenced with the NHS records of deaths in all settings via the Data Access Tracing Service (DATS). This will generate the data requested.

Dear FOI,

Hello
Public Health Scotland have supplied the information requested as a total figure of deaths within 28 days of vaccination. I would be grateful if you could therefore do the same. All records of those vaccinated are held by PHE, therefore, it is possible for your department to calculate the total figure of those vaccinated deceased within 28 days. I will accept approximate figures. See below link for response for PHS.
