Deaths due to influenza in previous years
Dear Department of Health (Northern Ireland),
Could you please advise what statistics you hold which would indicate how many people in Northern Ireland died in recent years (e.g. most recent 5 years) as a result of influenza?
As I wish to make a comparison between the impact of influenza and SARS-CoV-2, it would be helpful if as much information as possible can be provided e.g. where influenza figures on a death certificate as the primary cause or simply also present, but not considered the primary cause of death.
If statistics also record a suspicion of the presence of influenza in the absence of any diagnostic confirmation could you please provide this also?
In the event that this is not within your remit, could you advise which agency I should address this request to?
Thank you in advance.
Yours faithfully,
J Tagg

I have spoken to colleagues within the Department who inform me that we do
not hold this level of information. However they do suggest that the
Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) may hold some of
the information you are seeking.
I have included a link to their website [1]here for you.
I hope this is helpful, but please come back to me if you need anything
further.
Regards
