Dear Airedale NHS Foundation Trust,

Twins Trust is undertaking a national multiple pregnancy bench-marking exercise. As part of this, I would like to request information relating to the multiple pregnancies delivered at Airedale Maternity Unit.

The data requested is for the following categories:
- Number of Multiple Birth Pregnancies (e.g. twins, triplets, quads +)
- Number of Foetuses delivered from a Multiple Birth
- Multiple Birth Still Births (number of babies)
- Multiple Birth pregnancies resulting in an Emergency C-Sections
- Multiple Birth Neonatal Deaths (number of babies)
- Multiple Birth Neonatal Admissions (number of babies admitted to a neonatal unit for their care)
For each of the following years 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Please also confirm if current antenatal care for multiple pregnancies (in 2020 and going forward) is delivered by a "a core team of named specialist obstetricians, specialist midwives and sonographers, all of whom have experience and knowledge of managing twin and triplet pregnancies" in accordance with NICE guideline NG137.

Please let me know if any questions are unclear.

Yours faithfully,

Keith Reed
CEO, Twins Trust

Dear Mr Reed

Thank you for your request for information from Airedale NHS Foundation Trust which was received on 22nd July 2020 . Your request has been given the Reference Number ANHSFT REF 4900.

We will now proceed to process the request. The deadline date for issuing you with a full response is 19th August 2020. We will try to respond to you before this date and we will contact you if we envisage delays or if we need more information from you.

Please note that under the Freedom of Information Act, some information can be subject to exemptions, which means that the Trust does not have to provide the information requested. Some exemptions are “absolute” such as personal information and some only apply where the “public interest” in maintaining the exemption, outweighs that of providing the information.

In some cases, where identifying, retrieving and processing the requested information requires more time than the “appropriate cost limit” of two and half days work, we may refuse the request or we can charge a fee. If the latter is the case, I will let you know and a Fees Notice will be issued to you. In that case you would need to pay the fee before we proceeded with your request, but we will offer assistance and advise you if, by modifying your request, we could provide you with some non-exempt or free of charge information.

Please contact me, quoting the Reference Number above, with any questions you might have about your request.

With kind regards

Deborah Cocker

Dear Mr Reed

Further to your application to access information under the Freedom of
Information Act (ANHSFT REF. 4901) please find our response below.

2017 2018 2019
- Number of Multiple Birth Pregnancies (e.g. twins,
triplets, quads +) 25 26 21
- Number of Foetuses delivered from a Multiple Birth 50 52 42
- Multiple Birth Still Births (number of babies) 0 0 0
- Multiple Birth pregnancies resulting in an Emergency
C-Sections 6 10 6
- Multiple Birth Neonatal Deaths (number of babies) 0 <5* <5*
- Multiple Birth Neonatal Admissions (number of babies
admitted to a neonatal unit for their care) 24 24 24

*The actual number of deaths has been exempted from disclosure because the
numbers are very small and we feel there is a high risk that families
could be identified, particularly if someone was already aware of other
information about them.  We are a small Trust in a rural area and most of
our staff  live locally too.  The figures relate to recent births and it
is likely therefore that the families still live in the area.  The
exemption has been applied under S40(2) of the FOI Act which protects
personal information.

Please also confirm if current antenatal care for multiple pregnancies (in
2020 and going forward)  is delivered by a "a core team of named
specialist obstetricians, specialist midwives and sonographers, all of
whom have experience and knowledge of managing twin and triplet
pregnancies" in accordance with NICE guideline NG137.

No – women are not provided antenatal care by a core team.  We have
relatively small numbers of multiple births.  High risk twin pregnancies
and triplet pregnancies would be referred to the local tertiary unit for
specialised care.

We trust you find our response helpful.  If you feel we are not complying
with our publication scheme, you feel your request has not been properly
handled, or you are dissatisfied, you can write within 40 working days to
Brendan Brown, Chief Executive at the address below to request a review.
You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner under
section 50 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 if you are dissatisfied
with the outcome of that review.

Unless identified as another party's copyright, you may use and re-use the
information we have provided (not including logos or photographs), free of
charge in any format or medium, under the terms of the Open Government
Licence which can be viewed via the link below.
