Data on balcony fires, in terms of quantity and causes

Roedd y cais yn llwyddiannus.

Dear Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service,

Please supply me with data relating to fires on balconies on residential buildings in your area, as follows;

• How many balcony fires occurred in the prior three years (2017 to 2020)? Please provide gross total and also breakdown by year.
• How many building fires occurred where balconies contributed to the external spread of the fire?
• The ratio breakdown of identified/suspected causes of these balcony fires (ie; barbecue, discarded cigarette, etc).

Yours faithfully,

Stephen Cole

Dear Mr Cole

Further to your request under the Freedom of Information Act.  Please find
our response below:

Our Incident recording system (IRS) collects detailed information
regarding incidents that Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue service have
attended. Incident types are broken down and specific incidents can be put
into categories. Unfortunately ‘Balcony fires’ is not a category.

By checking with our IRS manager in control we were able to confirm that
there is not a ‘balcony fire’ category, however, we may use the term
‘Balcony fire’ in the additional comments free text section.

Searching within a free text field can always be a little unreliable,
often spelling or grammatical errors may occur and therefore it may not be
a true representation of the data. We have used wildcards on my
search(%Balc%) which has allowed us to find more information as it will
take into account any word that has ‘balc’ within, before or after any
letter.

We found 10 incidents from 2017 – 2020 that included ‘Balc’ somewhere
within the comments section. Out of these 10, only 4 were related to fire
on a balcony, the rest were related to rescues or gaining access to
properties.

2017 – There were 3 Incidents relating to fire on a balcony

-          Unattended BBQ  x2

-          Smouldering Plant pot which was used to discard cigarettes

2018 – There was 1 incident relating to fire on a balcony

-          BBQ being used on balcony.

I have attached a copy of the Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service
Freedom of Information Complaints Procedure for your information.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any further
assistance.

Kind regards

Patricia
