Criminal records of GMC staff (2)
Dear General Medical Council,
Thank you for responding to my recent request for information in which you stated that 4 employees of the GMC have an unspent criminal conviction.
However you did not provide all of the information that I requested. I also asked for the number of employees with a spent criminal conviction. Thank you in advance for providing this information.
Yours faithfully,
Andrew Palmer

Dear Mr Palmer
Thank you for your email. I’m sorry for my oversight in not responding to
this point in my previous correspondence.
The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 means that ex-offenders do not
have to disclose criminal convictions to employers once they have become
spent. There are only some exceptions, such as direct contact with
vulnerable people, but this doesn’t include GMC job roles.
Therefore, we will not hold any information about staff who have a spent
criminal conviction either when they were recruited or when in post.
Yours sincerely
Julian Graves

Dear Julian Graves (0161 923 6351),
The GMC should hold information about offences that were unspent at the moment the person became employed by the GMC.
I am sure you could argue that you are not obliged to release this information, but in view of the need to maintain the reputation of the GMC as an organisation that operates with openness it would be better if you did.
Yours sincerely,
Andrew Palmer
I am out of the office until Tuesday 7 June 2016 and do not have access to

I will consider your email on my return. If it requires urgent attention

Dear Mr Palmer
I'm extremely sorry for my oversight in not responding sooner to you on this matter.
I can confirm that we have no employees with convictions that were unspent at the point of joining the GMC but which are now spent.
Yours sincerely
