Covid-19 Diagnosis Procedures

Roedd y cais yn llwyddiannus.

Dear Public Health Wales,

I have copied a link below which will direct you to a response to an FOI by PHE regarding the RT-PCR Tests.

https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/p...

I refer to:

“RT-PCR detects the presence of genetic material specific to SARS-CoV-2 virus but cannot confirm accurately that that is has come from live, replicating virus (transmissible infection). This means it can detect specific SARS-CoV-2 genetic material but not whether or how infectious a person may be.”

a) Can you confirm that the RT-PCR test is able to detect the presence of genetic material specific to SARS-CoV-2 virus?

b) Can you confirm that the RT-PCR test is able to detect Covid-19 disease?

c) If the RT-PCR test is unable to detect Covid-19 disease - are you able to provide a procedure/guidance document for the diagnosis of Covid-19 infection; the recommended steps from a positive RT-PCR test for SARS-CoV2 genetic material, to clinical diagnosis of the disease Covid-19? For example:

Where a person has received a positive RT-PCR test for SARS-CoV2 genetic material, but has never had symptoms of the disease Covid-19 – How might this situation be determined as an asymptomatic infection of Covid-19 disease? What steps are taken to ensure that the test has not generated a false positive result?

Where a person has a positive RT-PCR test for SARS-CoV2 genetic material and shows symptoms; the symptoms are mild/inconclusive - what steps are taken to verify the symptoms are those of Covid-19 and not those of a different infection?

Yours faithfully,

Ian Bewley
