Please see the attached spreadsheet. Data is provided for the 2015/16 and
2016/17 UCAS cycles.

Please note that figures of five or fewer have been replaced with an
asterisk. This is because individuals may otherwise be identifiable from
the data provided. This information is therefore exempt from disclosure
under Section 40 (2) of the Freedom of Information Act, which states that
"any information to which a request for information relates is also exempt
information if - (a) it constitutes personal data."

Questions 1, 5 and 21

Table 1 shows the number of applications received, offers made and number
of students accepted onto an Undergraduate degree programme in the
Electrical Engineering department at Imperial College London split by
Gender, Programme and whether the applicant was offering three or more A
levels. In relation to question 12 above, “If offer is met” has been taken
to mean those candidates who were accepted onto the course and whose place
was confirmed. Only those who selected their Imperial Offer as their firm
choice (or who later became firm with Imperial College London) and whose
place was confirmed, have been counted.

Question 2

In relation to question 2 above requesting “All As results attained for
each subject (not just top 3) including EPQ”, this information is not
available – this information is not required on an application and
therefore this data is not verified by the College and as a result any
data would be incomplete.

Questions 3 and 4

Table 3 shows Applicants' predicted and achieved A level grades and
whether an offer was made split by Programme and UCAS cycle. Data includes
all A level grades offered by applicants at the time of their application.
For some students this includes any A-Level grades that have already been
achieved as well as their predicted grades. Data only includes those A
level qualifications where a predicted or achieved grade was provided on
the UCAS form, i.e. data on the A-Level grades subsequently achieved by
students after their application has been submitted is not included.  It
should be noted that applicants may have been taking, or may have taken
other non-A level qualifications that may have been reviewed as part of
their application and may have formed the basis of an offer. Data excludes
the Extended Project Qualification (see table 6 for Applicants' predicted
or achieved grade in Extended Project and whether an offer was made).

Question 6

Table 7 shows Interview Scores for applicants invited to interview split
by Programme and UCAS Cycle.

Question 7

In relation to question 7 above requesting the “UCAS Application
score/rating”, this information is not retained by the College beyond the
end of the admissions cycle. Therefore, we no longer hold the information
for the 2015-16 or 2016-17 cycles.

Questions 8 and 9

Table 2 shows the number of applications received, Applicants invited to
interview, Applicants Rejected after Interview, Total Offers Made and
Total Number of Rejected Applications split by Programme and UCAS Cycle.
Interview data is not available by applicant as data for previous UCAS
cycles has been anonymised in line with Imperial College London data
retention policy. It is therefore not possible to report of Gender,
applicants rejected pre-interview, offer details or full application
outcomes.

Question 10

Table 4 shows the reason for application rejection split by UCAS cycle and
Programme. Data has been provided where a rejection reason has been
recorded.

Questions 11 and 12

Table 5 shows the A level offer made to A level candidates and whether
candidates had their place confirmed. “Non-standard” offers include all
non-A level offers, any offers requiring less than three A levels (for
example where a candidate is taking a mix of A levels and Cambridge Pre-U
Certificates) or candidates offering a mix of A levels already completed
and A levels currently being taken, for example where a candidate
completed A level maths early and where they were still taking two A level
yet to be awarded at the point of application.  Number of students
accepted refers to those candidates who selected their Imperial offer as
their firm choice (or who became firm with Imperial College London) and
who were accepted onto the course and had their place was confirmed.

Questions 13 - 17

The information for questions 13 to 17 is not held.

Question 18

No offers for Electrical and Electronic Engineering Undergraduate degree
programmes required an applicant to take a STEP paper.

Question 19

Not applicable.

Question 20

The interview scoring sheet is attached.

Question 21

See data provided in the table 1

Question 22

Table 6 shows Applicants' predicted or achieved grade in Extended Project
and whether an offer was made. Data only includes those Extended Project
qualifications where a predicted or achieved grade was provided on the
UCAS form.

Dear IMPFOI,

Thank you for your response.

In my earlier request I requested the data 'for each applicant'. The data provided has been representing applicants as a whole and hence fails to answer the question asked. An example of data concerning 'each applicant' is as follows.

- rows of candidates X
- columns to answer the questions requested for each candidate.

If this format is used questions should be answered from questions 1 and onward.

Additionally, the subjects in which these grades have been achieved/predicted for are not mentioned. Could you please provide this. If this is not possible, could you please produce a table listing the subjects ( for all applicants including those who have done more than 3 A levels or As levels) the number of applicants for each certain type of subjects and how many of those received an offer.

e.g
Maths, further maths,Physics 54 applicants 23 received an offer
Maths Further maths,Physics, Economics 20 applicants 14 received an offer

Furthermore, In table 1 you have not stated whether the applicant offered 4 or more a levels however the table's title claims to have done so.

Finally, Table 3 fails to mention how many applicants had the predicted and achieved grade and only how many achieved the offer. Additionally, how has both predicted and achieved grades been put into the same column when clearly the data under this does not show the data for both questions posed?

Could you please redraft your response as it has failed to answer the questions imposed especially in regards to the 'each applicant' element which I believe has made this Data irrelevant in regards to the question posed.

If the Information is too big I would suggest that Providing the data for 'each applicant' in the last 2 cycles for the only Electrical and Electronic engineering would provide a more accurate answer where each cycles data should be separated from the other.

Questions should be answered in priority of 1 to 20 where 1 is the highest priority.

Yours sincerely,

John Murdock

Dear IMPFOI,

Could you please provide an appropriate data for the redrafted response.

Yours sincerely,

John Murdock

Dear IMPFOI,

Could you please provide an update. If you are unable to do this could you please simply list the following:

Dear IMPFOI,

Could you please provide a suitable date for the provision of the corrected data as it has been delayed extensively in regards to the date you have provided.

Yours sincerely,

John Murdock

IMPFOI, Imperial College London

Dear Mr Murdock,

Thank you for your email.

The College is currently working on your updated request and we will endeavour to respond by 6 October 2017, that date being 20 working days from when we received your follow up request.

Kind regards,

Bryony Greenfield

Dear IMPFOI,

After having answered my FOI request incorrectly which you are liable for and then taking another 20 working days to answer the request is frankly unacceptable.

I will be requesting an internal review to correct this so you are able to answer the questions 'For each applicant' where applicants go down in rows and the questions answered in columns next to each applicant in columns as per my FIRST reply to your response for all Electrical and Electronic engineering applicants.

Yours sincerely,

John Murdock

Dear Mr Murdock,

Thank you for your email dated 8 September 2017 and subsequent follow up
emails.

Please find below the College’s responses to the points that you have
raised:

Line by line data

The College is unable to provide data on a line by line basis for each
applicant as individuals would then be identifiable. For many combinations
of offers, grades, subjects etc, the number of applicants would be
extremely small and providing this information could lead to individual
applicants becoming identifiable even if the figures are redacted. This
information is therefore exempt from disclosure under Section 40 (2) of
the Freedom of Information Act, which states that "any information to
which a request for information relates is also exempt information if -
(a) it constitutes personal data." We have therefore provided data on an
aggregated basis.

Table 1: 3 or more A-Levels

The data provided in Table 1 of our original response shows information
for candidates that were offering 3 or more A-Levels (or whether they were
a non A-Level applicant, as requested in Point 21). This information can
be found in the columns titled ‘A-Level Candidate’ in Table 1.  Candidates
identified as “A level candidates” are those who declared three or more A
levels on their UCAS form. This excludes candidates who were offering a
mix of qualifications, for example A levels and Cambridge Pre-U
certificates. ). Your original request did not specify that data was
required for applicants offering 4 or more A-Levels only.

Subjects and grades of predicted and achieved A-Levels

You have queried why the subjects studied have not been provided with the
predicted and achieved A-Level grades. As you will see in Table 3 of our
original response, there are numerous different combinations of predicted
and achieved A-Level grades and therefore the majority of the figures fall
into the category of ‘five or fewer’ and have had to be redacted for data
protection purposes. In addition, there are approximately 170 different
combinations of A-Level subjects that applicants were taking at the time
they submitted their application. Therefore, if each of these subject
combinations was provided, with the predicated and achieved grades, almost
all of the figures would need to be redacted. However, there is a risk
that applicants would still be identified by the subject and grade
combinations alone (for example if there was only one candidate with a
particular subject and grade combination applying to a particular course)
and therefore this data cannot be provided.

Your request asked for all predicted and achieved grades for each subject,
not just the top 3, and the College provided this in Table 3 of our
original response. In reference to Table 3, the data includes a
combination of the predicted and already achieved A-Levels at the point of
application, i.e. it shows the applicants’ academic profile at the time
their application was made. It does not show how many applicants achieved
the offer. It shows, for each combination of predicted and already
achieved A-Level grades, how many applicants had an offer made to them and
how many did not.

Further, predicted and already achieved A-Levels have been combined in
Table 3 as, if reported separately, anyone who was predicted/ had already
achieved fewer than 3 A-Levels would be excluded from the data, for
example if candidates had sat one or more A-Level’s early and were still
studying for an additional two A levels at the point of application, they
would not be included. Additionally, for a candidate who had sat one A
level but was taking three more at the point of application, only the A
levels that the candidate was taking would be recorded, leading to
incorrect information about the applicant’s full academic profile. When
assessing an applicant’s A levels, all achieved and pending grades are
taken into consideration.

Additional data regarding A-Level subjects

In your follow up email dated 8 September you confirmed that, if providing
the above data would not be possible, you would like to receive the
subjects for all applicants including those who have done more than 3 A
levels or As levels, the number of applicants for each and how many of
those received an offer. Please see the attached spreadsheet. Table 1
shows the A-Level subjects taken or being taken by the applicant, the
number of applicants and whether an offer was made split by UCAS cycle. As
mentioned above, there were approximately 170 different subject
combinations for applicants that applied to the courses requested in the
relevant UCAS cycles. As a result the number of applicants for each
combination is ‘five or fewer’ in most cases. As explained above, even if
the figures are redacted, individuals may still be identified by the
combination of A-Level subjects. Therefore, details of the A-Level subject
combinations where the 'Offer Made' and 'Offer Not Made' figures were all
five or fewer for each programme have been withheld for data protection
purposes. The total number of applications received from applicants
offering the same A-Levels within the same UCAS Cycle have not be provided
where doing so would reveal the redacted number of 'Offers Made' or
'Offers Not Made'. We have also combined the programmes within each UCAS
cycle for data protection purposes due to the small numbers involved for
many of the subject combinations when split by programme.
