Cost Of Olympic Torch Procession

The request was successful.

Dear Peterborough City Council,
Please can you tell me the cost to the council for allowing the torch to pass though the city and its overnight stay in terms of extra pay for staff loss of earnings extra cost of Policing and road closures etc. Also what if any income was earned in terms of income from parking renting of space advertising etc. If so which companies spent the most. I do realise that The Council was probably forced to host the torch by LOCOG and National Government.

Yours faithfully,

Michael Taylor

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST –  FOI-12-0504

Dear Sir,

I apologise for the delay in responding to your request but your request
for information has now been considered and the information requested is
given below.

Please can you tell me the cost to the council for allowing the torch to
pass though the city and its overnight stay in terms of extra pay for
staff loss of earnings extra cost of Policing and road closures etc. Also
what if any income was earned in terms of income from parking renting of
space advertising etc. If so which companies spent the most. I do realise
that The Council was probably forced to host the torch by LOCOG and
National Government.

Please see Attachment 1 for a full breakdown of the costings for the
Olympic Torch Relay.

For the event there was no extra pay for staff.

A day on day comparison of takings in city council car parks has shown a
40% increase.  For Tuesday 26 June, the income was £5,496.30 and for
Tuesday 3 July, the income was £7,730.75.

The council was unable to charge for advertising as the event was sponsor
protected by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic
Games (LOCOG).

Peterborough benefitted both socially and commercially with the arrival of
the Olympic Torch Relay. Businesses in the city centre experienced an
increase in trade and the city council’s Destination Centre welcomed
additional visitors before and after the celebrations in Cathedral Square.
The extra footfall during the afternoon and evening provided a welcome
boost for restaurants, cafés and pubs. Retail units in the city centre
also benefitted from the crowds that gathered to see the torch
celebrations.

From an educational perspective the Torch Relay gave pupils at many of our
schools the opportunity to take part in the Olympic celebrations, whether
it be creating lion and unicorn sculptures for the relay route or
performing the specially commissioned Song for Peterborough. This is
likely to have been a once in a lifetime event for many of these young
people and an experience they will carry with them throughout their lives.

Peterborough also received local and regional media coverage as a result
of the Olympic Torch Relay which helps to position Peterborough as a great
place to live, work and spend time. This should help to attract people and
investment into the city long after the day of the relay.
