Dear Howard

I am writing in response to your request under the Freedom of Information
Act 2000 whereby you requested –

I am interested in learning about the arrangements between your
organisation and Hanban, and any other organisation that is involved in
setting up the Confucius Institute at your organisation.

I would like to access items such as the agreement, along with any
documents detailing the arrangement between your organisation, Hanban and
any other organisations involved, and any donations (monetary or
otherwise)  in relation to the setting up of the CI at your organisation.

The University of Manchester and Hanban signed an agreement in 2005 to set
up the Confucius Institute and our Chinese university partner is Beijing
Normal University, with whom we have collaborated with in delivering
Chinese language teaching and learning as well as promoting the Chinese
culture, education (student mobility) and science.

The Confucius Institute is jointly funded by the University of Manchester
and Hanban with an annual operation budget of £600K, of which the
University makes significant financial contribution plus income generated
through the Institute services and grant application to Hanban.

The Confucius Institute operates within the UK law and follows the
University policies and practices.

We have also attached a copy of the agreement as well.

I hope this information is useful.

Best wishes

Holly
