Commemorative Brexit Coins
Dear Her Majesty's Treasury,
I would like to enquire about 50p coins that were struck to commemorate the United Kingdoms exit from the European Union. A BBC article (https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-50215983) suggests the coins will now be recycled due the the further extension to Brexit.
I would like to know;
a) How many commemorative 50p coins were commissioned to be struck by the Royal Mint.
b) Will any coins be retained for circulation for when the UK leaves the EU at a later date, and if so, how many?
c) How much will the recycling of the coins cost, and will the Royal Mint retain the metals or sell them? If sold, who will profit from the sale of the metals?
d) Will the recycling of the coins be undertaken by the Royal Mint, or be contracted out? If the latter, who will be responsible for the recycling of the coins, and what vetting process is in place to ensure they can be trusted with currency?
If you don't have any of this information, please let me know which authority to contact to obtain it.
Yours faithfully,
Finlay Cox
