Classics admissions statistics (state and private schools)

Roedd y cais yn rhannol lwyddiannus.

Dear University College London,

I am writing to you in order to make a request for information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

I would like to know for each of the last 10 academic years (2010-11 to 2019-2020):

A) How many students in total were admitted to study the Classics BA (Q800) degree? (I.e. how many accepted their offers and started the course)
B) How many of this total number were educated at private schools?
C) How many of this total number were educated at state schools?

If you need any clarification then please do not hesitate to contact me. Under Section 16 it is your duty to provide advice and assistance and so I would expect you to contact me if you find this request unmanageable in any way.

I would also like to request that the information is sent back in an Excel spreadsheet. Please send confirmation of receipt of this request and I look forward to hearing back within 20 working days.

Yours faithfully,

Robyn Schaffer

Section 40 exempts personal information about a ‘third party’ (someone
other than the requester), if revealing it would breach the principles of
data protection legislation. Data protection legislation prevents personal
information from disclosure if it would be unfair or at odds with the
reason why it was collected, or where the subject had officially served
notice that releasing it would cause them damage or distress.

Although there are no identifiable details within the data being
disclosed, that data may be used by ‘motivated intruders’ and other
knowledgeable third parties to identify the grades achieved by particular
students as part of a jigsaw-effect. This is where strands of data
available to an individual can be put together to create personal data not
in the public domain. There would be no expectation that this type of
information would be disclosed to the wider public and it would be
considered unfair to do so.

As a consequence, we have anonymised the data so as to protect the
identities of the persons concerned. Exact figures have been replaced by
ranges of 5-10, 10-15 ,15-20, 20-25 and 25-30.

It is for these reasons that this information is exempt under section
40(2) of the Act.

More information on the anonymisation of data can be found at:
[1]https://ico.org.uk/media/1061/anonymisat...

You are free to use any information supplied for your own use, including
for non-commercial research purposes. The information may also be used for
the purposes of news reporting. However, any other type of re-use, for
example by publishing or issuing copies to the public, will require the
permission of the copyright owner.

If you are unhappy with our response to your request and wish to make a
complaint or request a review of our decision, please email
[2][email address]. Emails should include the words ‘Internal
Review’ in the subject and be marked For the Attention of the Chief
Operating Officer, alternatively you should write to:

Chief Operating Officer

University College London

If you are not content with the outcome of the internal review, you may
apply directly to the Information Commissioner at the address given below.
You should do this within two months of our final decision. (Please note,
complaints and requests for internal review received more than two months
after the initial decision will not be handled.)

If you have any queries or concerns, please contact me using the details
provided in this email and including the request reference number.
