Classics admissions statistics (state and private schools)

Roedd y cais yn rhannol lwyddiannus.

Dear University of Bristol,

I am writing to you in order to make a request for information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

I would like to know for each of the last 10 academic years (2010-11 to 2019-2020):

A) How many students in total were admitted to study the BA Classics (Q800) and BA Classical Studies (Q810) degrees? (I.e. how many accepted their offers and started the courses)
B) How many of this total number were educated at private schools?
C) How many of this total number were educated at state schools?

If you need any clarification then please do not hesitate to contact me. Under Section 16 it is your duty to provide advice and assistance and so I would expect you to contact me if you find this request unmanageable in any way.

I would also like to request that the information is sent back in an Excel spreadsheet. Please send confirmation of receipt of this request and I look forward to hearing back within 20 working days.

Yours faithfully,

Robyn Schaffer

Dear Miss Schaffer,

Freedom of Information Request (our reference FOI19-588)

We refer to your Freedom of Information request dated 12^th December. You
requested the following information:

“I would like to know for each of the last 10 academic years (2010-11 to
2019-2020):

A) How many students in total were admitted to study the BA Classics
(Q800) and BA Classical Studies (Q810) degrees? (I.e. how many accepted
their offers and started the courses)
B) How many of this total number were educated at private schools?
C) How many of this total number were educated at state schools?”

University’s Response

Further to Section 1 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the “Act”) we
confirm that the information requested is partially held by the University
of Bristol (the “University”).

Please find the information requested in the table attached. Please note
that the University does not record "Private" schools, we record
Independent or State schools, as defined by The Higher Education
Statistics Agency. In addition, we do not record the school type for
international students, these therefore appear within the "Unknown",
alongside direct application and students with no school records.

The University does not release exact counts of less than five because
these are personal data of third parties or, if linked with other personal
identifiers in the public domain, would be likely to become personal data.
This information has been withheld under section 40(2) of the Act, on the
grounds that disclosure would likely breach the data protection principles
enshrined in the Data Protection Act 2018.

Internal Review Procedure

If you are dissatisfied with the handling of your request, then you have a
right under Section 50 of the Act to request an internal review.  All such
requests must be sent to us within 40 days, and must clearly state our
reference number (at the top of this email) and your reason for requesting
an internal review.  We will respond to your request for an internal
review within 20 working days of receipt.

Your request for an internal review should be sent to:

Director of Legal Services

Secretary’s Office

University of Bristol

Senate House

Tyndall Avenue

Bristol

BS8 1TH

Or you can email your request to [University of Bristol request email],
quoting your FOI reference number at the head of this letter.

Information Commissioners Office

Should you remain dissatisfied with the final outcome of the internal
review then you may apply directly to the Information Commissioner (the
“ICO”) for an independent review.  The ICO is the Government’s Independent
Body responsible for overseeing the Freedom of Information Act 2000, the
Data Protection Act 2018 and The Environmental Information Regulations
2004.

Please note the ICO will only review cases that have exhausted the
University’s internal review procedure. All correspondence to the ICO must
quote the University’s reference number and your reasons for your appeal.
The ICO’s contact details are as follows:

The Information Commissioners Office

Wycliffe House

Water Lane

Wilmslow

Cheshire

SK9 5AF

More information can be found at the ICO’s website

Kind Regards

Dear University of Bristol FOI,

Thank you for your response and providing me with some of the information I required. I was just wondering why I was only provided with information for the academic years 2014/15 to 2019/20? I asked in my request if I could receive the information for the years 2010/11 to 2019/20, so I just wanted to know why I have not been sent the data for the first four? And if you don't have it, do you know where I could it them from?

Many thanks,

Robyn Schaffer
