Dear Ms Fox

Thank you for your request for information made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA). I've addressed your questions in turn below.

1. Is there a list of guidelines that the GMC uses after unprofessional or criminal behaviour to determine the length of suspension from practising or removal of licence for life please could you send me these.

A Medical Practitioners Tribunal (MPT) considers whether a doctor's fitness to practise is impaired and therefore whether a sanction should be placed on their registration.

The sanctions guidance for members of MPTs is available on the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service website via this link: http://www.mpts-uk.org/decisions/1655.asp. This is for use when considering what sanction to impose following a finding that a doctor’s fitness to practise is impaired.

2. What are the normal procedures after receiving complaints about doctors from patients?

Details about our procedures for investigating concerns about doctors are available on our website via this link: http://www.gmc-uk.org/concerns/the_inves....

3. Could you send me the child protection policy of the GMC?

Our guidance 'Protecting children and young people: doctors' responsibilities' is available on our website at http://www.gmc-uk.org/guidance/ethical_g....

4. Who are the GMCs insurers for cases such as that a doctor was wrongly allowed to carry on practising by the GMC after allegations against a doctor?

The GMC does not carry insurance against such claims.

I should add that both the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) and the GMC are able to refer an MPT's decision to the relevant court if it believes it is not sufficient for the protection of the public. Further information on appeals against a final decision made by an MPT is available here: http://www.mpts-uk.org/decisions/1656.asp.

Decisions made by the GMC not to refer a doctor to an MPT at the end of an investigation can be reviewed in certain circumstances (under Rule 12 of the Fitness to Practise Rules - http://www.gmc-uk.org/about/legislation/...) and may also be challenged by judicial review.

5. How many complaints were received each in 2015 and 2016 against doctors, and how many doctors was this.? Please show the number of complaints per doctor but not the doctors names.
How many doctors were suspended in 2016? What were the lengths of those suspensions?
How many doctors were struck off the register or there renewal was not allowed?

Please see the attached spreadsheet.

If you have any queries regarding this response please contact me. If you have any concerns about the handling of your request you can also contact Julian Graves, Information Access Manager, at [email address].
