Dear Mr. Foomer,

Thank you for your request for information made under the Freedom of
Information Act 2000 ("the Act"), which we received on 24^th January 2011.
"Please supply a list of the data sent to the following organisations by
virtue of the tracking code contained in your web pages on the Channel 4
web site:

Omniture

Facebook Connect

Please also supply the total cost incurred by C4, for each organisation on
a year by year basis.

Please supply the country where the transferred data is processed".

We have tried to deal with each of your queries in turn below:

Omniture

Please find attached a complete list of the data sets collected by
Omniture on behalf of Channel 4.

Channel 4 use Omniture to better understand how visitors to C4.Com, and
our other online properties, interact with our online content. It helps
us understand which content (Text, Images, Video) visitors are consuming;
this in turn allows us to optimise the site to improve navigation paths
around it, with an aim of making the site easier to use, and also informs
our future content selection decisions. Additionally, Omniture allows us
to quantify site usage, for internal reporting purposes, and also helps us
identify and resolve "faults" such as broken links. Please also note that
this is not personal data.

In terms of the cost to Channel 4 for the provision of Omniture's
services; unfortunately, we are not able to supply this sort of
information to the general public as it would prejudice Channel 4's
commercial interests. If we were to release details of the value of the
Omniture contract, this would indicate to our suppliers the total funds
available for online market research and could then be used by suppliers
as a bargaining tool when negotiating rates with Channel 4. Further,
disclosure of this information would similarly prejudice the commercial
interests of Omniture, as if this information were released it may be used
as a bargaining tool by their other customers to negotiate more favorable
rates. This information is therefore exempt from disclosure pursuant to
section 43 of the Act (commercial interests). In applying section 43 we
are required to consider the public interest test. We do not believe it
would be in the public interest to prejudice Channel 4's or Omniture's
position by publishing details of Channel 4's spend on online market
research which can then be used by suppliers or respective customers to
negotiate lower rates.

However, we are able to confirm that this data is processed in the USA.

Facebook Connect

We can confirm that we do not send any information to Facebook, as part of
offering Facebook users the option of logging in to the site using their
Facebook log-in details on Channel4.com, and no information is sent to
Facebook.

Dear Mr. Foomer,

Thank you for your further request for information made under the Freedom
of Information Act 2000 ("the Act"), which we received on 1^st March 2011.
We note that you do not consider our previous response dated 1^st March
2011 to have been detailed enough and have therefore asked for further
information about the tracking or location data that Channel 4 passes to
Omniture.

As explained in our previous response, Channel 4 uses Omniture to better
understand how visitors to [1]www.channel4.com, and our other online
properties, interact with our online content. It helps us understand
which content (Text, Images, Video) visitors are consuming; this in turn
allows us to optimise the site to improve navigation paths around it, with
an aim of making the site easier to use, and also informs our future
content selection decisions. Additionally, Omniture allows us to quantify
site usage, for internal reporting purposes, and also helps us identify
and resolve "faults" such as broken links.

We have dealt with each of your specific questions in turn below:

Is the IP address passed to Omniture?

As set out in the attachment to our previous response, IP addresses are
included in the information that is passed to Omniture. However, these IP
addresses do not necessarily relate directly to the end user and, in many
cases, it will only be the user's public IP address as advertised by their
service provider which is forwarded to Omniture.

Is the location of the user passed to Omniture?

We can confirm that no location data is passed to Omniture.

Is the cookie issued to the user passed to Omniture?

As explained above, Channel 4 uses Omniture to better understand how
visitors to [2]www.channel4.com, and our other online properties, interact
with our online content. To do this, we use web tags (i.e. codes) and
cookies provided by Omniture on our websites. As you may be aware, a
cookie is a piece of information in the form of a very small text file
that is placed on an Internet user's hard drive. When a user visits a
Channel 4 website, a cookie containing the Omniture code is sent to the
user's browser and then stored on their computer's hard drive. The type of
information collected by these cookies includes content viewed and pages
and site sections visited.

For further information on how Channel 4 uses cookies, please see our
Privacy Policy which is available at the following link:

[3]http://www.channel4.com/privacy.html

Are technical details regarding the user's browser and computer passed to
Omniture? If so please provide details?

The following user data sets are passed to Omniture:

Browser user-agent string

Browser plug-ins

Javascript version

Browser height/width.

Please note that if you are unhappy with the decisions made in relation to
your request from Channel 4 you may ask for an internal review. If you
wish to do this you can email us, or you can write to FOI Admin Team -
Complaints, Channel 4 Television, 124 Horseferry Road, London SW1P 2TX.

Many thanks for your interest in Channel 4.

Yours sincerely,
