Change of rota

The request was successful.

Dear Fire service,

I would like to make a freedom of information request.

Does your service have a formal system that allows uniformed operational staff swap shifts. For example a firefighter who is due to work a Saturday can swap his work day with a firefighter who is rostered off?
if so, does your service record these swaps and keep a running tally of the swaps for the individuals?
What happens when one resigns or retires. Does your service have a way of dealing with any positive or negative balances for these swaps. For example the swap mentioned above what would happen if either of them then resigned or retired before the "pay back of the swap". Would the firefighter who got Saturday off have his final pay reduced because he never paid his day off back to the other firefighter? Or if the firefighter who worked the extra shift then retired or resigned. Would he receive a days pay for working the Saturday and the Firefighter that got the day off have to work a day to pay back the day off he got?

If you need anything clarified please contact me.

Yours faithfully,

A Jay

Dear A Jay
I refer to your Request for Information of the 9th November 2019 and
following a response from the appropriate department, I am pleased to be
able to provide you with the information you requested. Please see below:
Does your service have a formal system that allows uniformed operational
staff swap shifts. For example a firefighter who is due to work a
Saturday can swap his work day with a firefighter who is rostered off?
We have a ‘Stand In Policy’ that allows for individuals to voluntarily
swap duties referred to as a ‘Stand In’. All requests must be approved at
Station Manager or a level above.
If so, does your service record these swaps and keep a running tally of
the swaps for the individuals?
Stand Ins are recorded on our HR system/availability database ‘Firewatch’.
What happens when one resigns or retires. Does your service have a way of
dealing with any positive or negative balances for these swaps.
No, this is for the individuals to manage locally as it is a personal
voluntary arrangement.
For example the swap mentioned above what would happen if either of them
then resigned or retired before the "pay back of the swap". Would the
firefighter who got Saturday off have his final pay reduced because he
never paid his day off back to the other firefighter?
No, this would be down to the individuals to ensure the arrangement was
‘paid back’ prior to the last day of service.
Or if the firefighter who worked the extra shift then retired or resigned.
Would he receive a days pay for working the Saturday and the Firefighter
that got the day off have to work a day to pay back the day off he got?
No, as above.

I hope this information will be of assistance to you, and should you have
any further queries please do not hesitate to contact me.
In conclusion, I would like to take this opportunity to advise you that
if, at any time, you are dissatisfied with the way in which we deal with
your Request for Information, you can submit a request for an internal
review.  Having exhausted our process, you may ultimately refer your
complaint to the Information Commissioner, whose website is
[1]www.ico.org.uk, for final determination.
Yours sincerely
Emily

Dear Emily Houghton,

Thanks you for the prompt reply. Is there a formal policy that stipulates this informal arrangement of individuals managing it themselves. If so can you provide it.

Yours sincerely,

A Jay
