Car parking strategy

The request was partially successful.

Katja Leyendecker

Dear Newcastle upon Tyne City Council,

As part of the NewcastleGateshead Local Plan councils of Newcastle and Gateshead plan to have a car parking strategy. The Local Plan reads "A joint car parking strategy will ensure that all parking policies, strategies and action plans will be developed on a partnership basis between Newcastle and Gateshead and that there is a common approach to car parking provision."

Further it says "Gateshead and Newcastle will develop a joint car parking strategy to manage demand ... This will complement improvement of conditions for sustainable modes, including the expansion of Park and Ride."

I would like to make a request to see the car parking strategy, or inquire about the progress with the car parking strategy. If not completed yet, I would also like to know about the programme (overall timescale and benchmarks) to understand the process the councils are using to set up the strategy . Could I also ask the key partners the council is working with to finalise the strategy?

There is a good opportunity the councils have here to manage spatial demand and reallocate public space more equitably to improve sustainable travel options for a more viable and modern urban environment and happier and healthier citizens.

Yours faithfully,
Katja Leyendecker

Yours faithfully,

Katja Leyendecker

Transport Developments, Newcastle upon Tyne City Council

Dear Katja,

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request received on 6^th
November. The response is below.

Newcastle are continuing discussions with Gateshead on a car parking
strategy. However, Newcastle and Gateshead Councils are both subject to a
Direction from the UK Government relating to modelled Nitrogen Dioxide
concentrations within the two authorities.  This can be found at:
[1]https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/sy...

As part of this work, also working with North Tyneside Council and the
North East Combined Authority, the authorities have identified that
parking policy may be an area which can have a positive impact on air
quality for all three authorities, not simply Newcastle and Gateshead.
Correspondingly, the authorities have begun a joint proposal to DEFRA
which is expected to be completed as part of the wider Air Quality
Feasibility Study by the end of December 2018. This will ensure that we
account for parking policy within its wider context in transport and
across as wide a spatial area as possible.
