Cairngorm Ski Area

The request was successful.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I have recently sent this Freedom of Information request to the Cairngorm National Park but have been advised that they do not hold the information. They have suggested you may be able to further assist:

Under the Freedom of Information Act I would like to request the following information:

1. How much money was spent on building the funicular railway on Cairngorm?

2. Was the money a loan or a grant, or a combination of both? If a loan, where was the money loaned from? What is the rate of interest and pay back, and when is it estimated that this loan will be cleared?

3. Please list the total incoming and outgoings for the Cairngorm mountain ski area for the past 3 Financial Years.

4. Please list the total running costs for the funicular railway for the past 3 Financial Years.

5. How many lift/ski passes have been sold in each of the last 3 financial years? Please list the amount of profit made from ski passes sold in each of the last 3 Financial Years. If possible I would only like the profit from skiers/snow boarders, and not tourists using the funicular.

Please acknowledge receipt of my request. I look forward to your reply, which under FOI I understand should be by 30th June 2009.

Many thanks in advance.

Yours faithfully,

Amie Jones

Joanna Smart, Highlands and Islands Enterprise

Dear Ms Jones,

In reply to your request, received on 2^nd June 2009, Highlands and
Islands Enterprise has responded to your questions below.

1) How much money was spent on building the funicular railway on
Cairngorm?

HIE can confirm the total cost of constructing the funicular railway was
19.7 million.

2) Was the money a loan or a grant, or a combination of both? If a
loan, where was the money loaned from? What is the rate of interest and
pay back, and when it is estimated that this loan will be cleared?

HIE directly invested in the construction of the railway and therefore no
grants or loans were approved by HIE to third parties towards the build.
HIE did however receive an ERDF grant of £2.7 million in 1997 towards the
project.

3) Please list the total incoming and outgoings for the Cairngorm
mountain ski area for the past three financial years

4) Please list the total running costs for the funicular railway for the
past three financial years.

This information is included in CML*s annual accounts which is publicly
available from Companies House * [1]http://www.companieshouse.gov.uk/

5) How many lift/ski passes have been sold in each of the last three
financial years? Please list the amount of profit made from ski passes
sold in each of the last three financial years. If possible, I would only
like the profit from skiers/snow boarders, and not tourists using the
funicular.

2008/2009 - Skier numbers including season ticket holders - 65,100

2007/2008 * Skier numbers including season ticket holders - 62,000

2006/2007 * Skier numbers including season ticket holders - 38,584

CML publishes its profits within their annual accounts which, as explained
earlier, is available from Companies House. We do not hold information on
profits specifically relating to winter sports.

In addition to the above information, HIE has published documents relating
to the funicular railway on its website, which you may find of interest -

I trust that you will find this information of use, but should you wish to
request any further information please do not hesitate to contact me.
