Bullying of staff and students at the University of Bedfordshire

Dr Alfred D Vella made this Rhyddid Gwybodaeth request to University of Bedfordshire

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

Yn disgwyl am adolygiad mewnol gan University of Bedfordshire o'u triniaeth o'r cais hwn.

Dear University of Bedfordshire,
In 2000 three members of staff independently complained to the University about bullying by the same senior manager. The case was found for at least one member of staff.
The bully also eventually left the university but moved to other senior posts in academia.
All of the complainants left the University soon after – two being sacked.
Questions:
1) What did the University do to stop the bullying of staff and students by the bully
2) What did the University do to alert other institutions about the possibility of bullying continuing?
3) What part, if any, did alleged connections of the bully to the Labour party play in the University’s actions?
Yours faithfully,
Dr Alfred Vella

Dear Alfred,

Thank you for your email.

In order for us to respond to your freedom of information request, we will
require more information to ensure we locate the correct data:
specifically the name of the senior manager you are referring to.

I would recommend that you email this to us directly at
[1][University of Bedfordshire request email] via your personal email account, as using your
“What Do They Know” email means that your email to us would be published
on the internet, where it can be viewed by the general public. This would
mean that the person’s name would be viewable by the public as well, and
this would infringe on Data Protection Legislation.

Please note that if we do not hear from you within 20 days, we will
consider your request closed.

Kind Regards

Dear Legal Office,

It is a pity, then that the person accused, and I understand was found guilty of at least one count, was a ‘Guest of honour’ at a University graduation ceremony in the time of Vice Chancellor Bill Rammell! The connection with the Labour party has not been denied yet.

I would ask the university to think again about its treatment of victims and perpetrators of bullying.
I will be happy to make more information available to anyone who is interested.

I would also welcome the university to reconsider its response to my original request.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Alfred D Vella
Former Head of Computing, the Computing and Information Systems at the

Since my request the University seems to have removed mention of the bully, Mr Stephen Mortimer, from their web site – perhaps acknowledging their error is too much for the Vice Chancellor, perhaps a personal friend or friend of a friend of the bully, to acknowledge.

Dear Legal Office,

I hav enot received an acknowledgement of my new request.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Alfred D Vella

Dear University of Bedfordshire,

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.

I am writing to request an internal review of University of Bedfordshire's handling of my FOI request 'Bullying of staff and students at the University of Bedfordshire'.

Please clarify your response.
Is the University claiming that its Vice Chancellor:
a) did not know Mr Mortimer personally before he was invited?
b) did not know of the accusations made against him by staff the University and at WITT?
c) Ignores the past misdemeanours of people that it honours?

A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is available on the Internet at this address: https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/b...
