British Rail Class 777 battery charge.

The request was partially successful.

Dear Merseytravel,

Regarding the new British Rail Class 777 operating with battery power.

On average how many miles of running on 3rd rail track are required to recharge for every mile of 3rd rail running?

How long is required stationary, at a 3rd rail location is required to recharge the battery after every mile of running on battery power.

Are the vehicles designed for rapid charging as is used by https://vivarail.co.uk/fast-charge-recha... , if so how many rapid charge points are planned and where.

Yours faithfully,

John Bradley

Dear Mr Bradley

Thank you for your recent request made under the Freedom of Information
Act. Please find Merseytravel’s response below.

Please note that we are currently going through the final design phase of
the project and this could impact on the answers below.

 1. On average how many miles of running on 3rd rail network are required
to recharge for every mile off the 3rd rail network running?

The recharging of the batteries will be done whilst the unit is not
accelerating, i.e. during coasting and braking. The distance required for
recharging would also depend on the speed of the unit therefore, to make
this type of calculation we have used a typical coasting speed for a unit.

Based on an assumption that the unit is running at 50 mph and coasting at
this speed the distance required to recharge the battery per mile of
energy used is 0.35 miles.

Using braking events to store the energy is the most economical method and
will be reviewed as part of the design process.

 2. How long will the unit be required to stay stationary, at a 3rd rail
charging location, to recharge the batteries for every mile of running
on battery power.

The limiting factor for charging when stationary is the current at the
collector shoes and the number of collector shoes that are in contact with
the 3^rd rail. Using this information and the suppliers current design of
the system the unit will require 51 seconds of charging for every mile
operating in battery mode.

 3. Are the vehicles designed for rapid charging as is used by
[1]https://vivarail.co.uk/fast-charge-recha...
, if so how many rapid charge points are planned and where.

For the Headbolt lane extension there is no requirement for charging
stations as the unit will recharge the batteries during operation on the
3^rd rail network. This will be discussed as part of the design process
for any future routes.

I trust that this information is of interest to you.

Dear Henderson, Andrew,

Thanks for the early reply.

Based on what you have said it would take 25.2 seconds to recharge at 50 mph but 51 seconds if stationary? I would have thought that with some power being required to maintain 50mph the numbers would have been the other way around!

Yours sincerely,

John Bradley
