Dear Duchy of Lancaster,

Bona Vacantia

What measures does the Crown take to find the settlors or their representatives that the Crown has claimed property of as bona vacantia ?

Yours faithfully,

Mr. Lewis

Tim Crow, Duchy of Lancaster

Dear Mr Lewis,

Thank you for your enquiry which has been forwarded on to me to reply.

The Duchy of Lancaster is not subject to the Freedom of Information Act
2000, however, I am happy to treat your enquiry as a general enquiry
submitted to the Duchy.

Property of deceased persons which is bona vacantia in the County Palatine
of Lancaster vests in the Duchy Solicitor as the owner of last resort. It
is administered by the Duchy's solicitors who are Farrer & Co of Lincoln's
Inn and it is my understanding that local enquiries are made and
advertisements placed in the local press to try and identify or locate any
qualifying relatives of the deceased. In some cases the Duchy instructs
genealogists to assist with the search.

Yours sincerely,

Tim Crow, LLB
