Dear University of Leeds,

Please release an excel sheet, summarising the average scores and average successful scores of applicants on BMAT test and 9s at GCSE for successful applicants for the past three cycles.

If averages are unavailable anonymised raw data with the columns '9s at GCSE', 'BMAT Score' and 'Successful/Unsuccessful' would be appreciated.

Freedom of Information, University of Leeds

Dear Maximiliano Jiménez Vázquez,

Freedom of Information Response (Our Ref: K/20/225)

Thank you for your Freedom of Information (FOI) request dated 15 June
2020, reference K/20/225.

Your request read:

“Please release an excel sheet, summarising the average scores and average
successful scores of applicants on BMAT test  and 9s at GCSE for
successful applicants for the past three cycles.

If averages are unavailable anonymised raw data with the columns '9s at
GCSE', 'BMAT Score' and 'Successful/Unsuccessful' would be appreciated.”

The University of Leeds does not hold this information.

All of the scores used are converted across to our own scoring scheme
which is used for shortlisting.

o The BMAT raw scores are used in the following manner: All scores from
applicants to MBChB Leeds are put into a normal distribution curve.
Those candidates who are in the highest 20% receive a score 5/5 and
those who are in the lowest 20% receive a score of 1/5 and everything
in between is scored according to where they are placed in this
distribution.
o GSCEs are also converted across to a scoring system with GCSE (scoring
including Maths, English and 2 sciences) A*/A = 2, B = 1, C = 0 or
equivalent in the new GSCE marking scheme.

A ranking system is used to determine who is shortlisted to interview.

It may help to note that not all applicants will take GCSE qualifications
before applying to university. International or mature students, for
instance, may have equivalent qualifications or other qualifying
experience. All of these applications are considered depending on the
level 2 and level 3 qualifications that they have taken. Applicants who do
not hold relevant or sufficiently strong GCSE grades will not progress
through the initial triage and so will not be scored. Different grade
boundaries are in place for widening participation and non-widening
participation candidates.

As such, we do not retain the data for BMAT or GCSE scores of applicants
in a manner to answer your question (either successful or unsuccessful).

We hope this information is helpful. If you have any questions about this
email, however, please do not hesitate to contact us on [1][University of Leeds request email]
