Dear D L Jones

I refer to your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

The response to your request is as follow:

1. As attached. The only pupils missing are those from the SNRBs - details below:
Overmonnow - Total – 17

Pembroke - Total – 21

Caldicot - Total – 44

Mounton House - Total - 30

2. How many students in total have a confirmed Autistic Spectrum Disorder diagnosis? Please provide a information based in primary and secondary cohorts.

The Authority does not hold data on all pupils with a diagnosis of ASD specific.

From January PLASC return completed by schools we can identify pupils who are on the Special Educational Needs (SEN) list/register at School Action, School Action Plus and Statement of the SEN Code of Practice, where the primary identified need is ASD. In Monmouthshire Schools as of January 2017 there was a total of 60 pupils in Secondary and 57 in Primary with a recorded identified need on the SEN List as ASD.

3. Please describe the nature of provision for these students. I am interested in knowing if they are taught in their mainstream school, in resource bases / units in schools, a pupil referral unit or other forms of provision.

Monmouthshire LA has no specific ASD provision. The large majority of students are taught in mainstream classes with TA support as appropriate. Some students, according to the complexity of their need/learning difficulties may access smaller classes in Unit bases. Monmouthshire currently has 2 primary SNRB's for SLD/AUT/PMLD and 1 secondary school with a 55 place Unit for pupils with complex needs, which may include pupils with ASD.

In addition to the above there are some pupils with Statements of SEN with a diagnosis of ASD attending either mainstream or specialist provision in other surrounding Authorities (this can be due to catchment, Welsh language, parental preference etc) as well specialist provision to meet identified need.

There is one regional (Greater Gwent) secondary provision for ASD, hosted by Torfaen LA

Placement in specialist provision is not determined by a diagnosis, but on the complexity of need, overall functioning and cognitive ability according to a multi-agency assessment of a pupil's individual need.

4. Does the authority provide a home tuition service? We have a Pupil Referral Service which provides provision for pupils who have behaviour problems and who are at risk of exclusion from school and an EOTAS service which provides provision for young people who cannot attend school for medical reasons.

5. If so, how many students are currently registered with the service? Involvement with 36 pupils 10 pupils on roll

6. How many students were registered with the service in 2016-7? 52 pupils were referred last year, with 14 pupils on roll
