Are removing door locks and fitting fire alarms a service you charge for ?

The request was successful.

Dear Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service,

A recent press report states you attended a property in Blackamoor Lane Maidenhead after a five-year-old girl became trapped in her bedroom. It goes on to state "they (Firefighters) then spent about half-an-hour removing the lock, to ensure it wouldn’t happen again, and installing fire alarms"

Is this type of home maintenance service given free or do you charge for it ? I'd also like to know if the alarms were supplied by yourselves if so at what cost or were they provided by the householder ?

Yours faithfully,

Frank Morris

Dear Frank Morris,

I refer to your Request for Information dated 10^th January 2016 and my
subsequent acknowledgment e-mail on this subject.

Following a response from the Station Manager, I am pleased to be able to
provide you with a response to your enquiry:

‘A recent press report states you attended a property in Blackamoor Lane
Maidenhead after a five-year-old girl became trapped in her bedroom. It
goes on to state "they (Firefighters) then spent about half-an-hour
removing the lock, to ensure it wouldn’t happen again, and installing fire
alarms"

Is this type of home maintenance service given free or do you charge for
it?

I'd also like to know if the alarms were supplied by yourselves if so at
what cost or were they provided by the householder?’

With regards to lock removal, this action was considered reasonable at the
time by the incident commander as a preventative measure after discussion
with the occupier and gaining their consent.

The free fitting of smoke detectors is an additional service when a need
has been identified.  There is no universal provision to install smoke
alarms, however, Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service generally follow
a specific criteria, for example, over 65 years of age, social care
packages, threat of arson, after a fire incident etc. We will however, not
ignore any risk that is identified if we come across it, after any type of
incident.

I hope this information will be of assistance to you, and should you have
any further queries please do not hesitate to contact me.

In conclusion, I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that
if, at any time, you are dissatisfied with the way in which we deal with
your enquiry, you can submit a Complaint using the Royal Berkshire Fire
and Rescue Service's Complaints Procedure which is available via our
website [1]www.rbfrs.co.uk.  Having exhausted our Complaints Procedure,

Yours sincerely,
