Archived Documents Nuclear Testing

Dave Whyte made this Freedom of Information request to Y Weinyddiaeth Amddiffyn

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

Roedd y cais yn rhannol lwyddiannus.

Dear Ministry of Defence,

There are many documents relating to the British nuclear Tests (held in the 1950/60's) that that have yet to be released. I realise information on the plans for manufacturing these weapons should never be released, I am only interested in information that has had an impact on individuals lives. Namely radiation levels.

1. What date has been given for the release of all information regarding radiation levels both to the individual and individual area contamination.

2. If no final date has been given for the release of this information, could you please supply any documents showing the authority and reasons for refusal to give a specific date of release.

Yours faithfully,

Dave Whyte

Dear DES SEC-PolSecShips and Subs (MULTIUSER),
On reading your answer and my question, it is obvious you are attempting to avoid answering my broad question as to when all documents relating to this period are going to be releaseed so I will attempt to simplify the questions for you.

1. When are the 'GAMMA' radiation levels recorded by AWRE staff at 'B' site, Christmas Island, where 200 Servicemen were living in the forward area during the months of August, September and October 1958 going to be released?

2. When are the 'BETA' radiation levels recorded on the instruments in the Bunker at the Atomic Bomb ground zero for August, September and October 1958 going to be released.

You have this information in your archives. I witnessed the AWRE Staff taking the radiation readings and saw the instruments recording the radiation levels in the bunker, there must be a date for release of these documents whether it is 2018, 2058 or whatever!

Yours sincerely,

Dave Whyte

Archive this regarding Global Nuclear Testing.

This is both fascinating and disturbing, but very true.

In my above annotation, Japanese artist Isao Hashimoto has created a beautiful, undeniably scary time-lapse map of the 2053 nuclear explosions which have taken place between 1945 and 1998, beginning with the Manhattan Project's "Trinity" test near Los Alamos and concluding with Pakistan's nuclear tests in May of 1998. This leaves out North Korea's two alleged nuclear tests in this past decade (the legitimacy of both of which is not 100% clear).

Each nation gets a blip and a flashing dot on the map whenever they detonate a nuclear weapon, with a running tally kept on the top and bottom bars of the screen. Hashimoto, who began the project in 2003, says that he created it with the goal of showing"the fear and folly of nuclear weapons." It starts really slow — if you want to see real action, skip ahead to 1962 or so — but the buildup becomes overwhelming.

Many thanks for that Alvin,

I didn't realise there had been so many nuclear explosions. The the only Country still to say there is no radiation from these tests is the United Kingdom. (They are well aware of the dangers from radiation but daren't admit it because of the Civilian Nuclear Industry!)

Totally agree with you Dave. The governments of the United Kingdom are notorious for denials and cover ups.

2053 nuclear explosions which have taken place between 1945 and 1998 ... And we wonder why cancer is so rife in the world today, so rife in fact it will be the cause of death in 1 in 3 of us according to UK cancer research.

Dear Mr Whyte

Acknowledgement of Request for Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Internal Review

I acknowledge your email in which you expressed your dissatisfaction of MOD's response of 15 March 2013 to your request for information under the FOIA, our reference 18-02-2013-092631-001 and this office will therefore conduct an independent review of the handling of the case.

The Department's internal target for completing internal reviews is 20 working days from receipt and we therefore aim to complete the review and respond to you by 16 April 2013. While we are working hard to achieve this, in the interests of providing you with a realistic indication of when you should expect a response, I should advise that the majority are actually currently taking between 20 and 40 working days to complete.

The review will involve a full, independent, reconsideration of the handling of the case as well as the final decision.

Regards,
Ms Usha Sondhi
