Approved exam deferrals, extensions, and exceptional circumstances requests
Dear London School of Economics,
I am writing to you under the Freedom of Information Act of 2000 to request the following information from the competent authority.
Information regarding the ratio of approved LSE exam deferrals, project extensions, and exceptional circumstances to total deferral, extension, and exceptional circumstances requests over the last 5 years (2014-2019).
I would appreciate it if the information was separated based on undergraduate and postgraduate requests. I would also appreciate if the information on exam deferrals, project extensions, and exceptional circumstances were separated.
Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
The Beaver, the Newspaper of the LSE Student Union
Dear 'The Beaver'

Dear Marianne
Further to your recent FoI request relating to LSE exam deferrals, project
extensions, and exceptional circumstances, the Schools response is
provided below:
The School does not maintain a central database of deferrals, project
extensions, or exceptional circumstances. All extensions are dealt with by
individual departments. Each department may maintain records on how many
deferrals they have received versus how many have been approved, however,
they all have different systems for doing so.
While our Student services team process the deferrals approved by
individual departments, they do not log or maintain a list of unsuccessful
deferrals. In addition, please note that ‘exceptional circumstances’ do
not get approved or declined. The information is collected and sent to the
Sub-board for their consideration and it is always considered.
The only way to obtain the information you seek would be to approach each
department and each respective course tutor to compile and consolidate
this extension information. Given the size and scale of the task required
to do so, unfortunately we have to refuse this request on cost grounds
under FOIA Section 12.
If you think that the information provided does not meet your request,
contact Rachael Maguire on 020 7849 4622 or write to Louise Nadal, School
Secretary, London School of Economics and Political Science, Houghton
Street, London, WC2A 2AE. We will then review the response to your request
and get back to you within 20 working days. You can also contact the
Information Commissioner's Office [1]http://www.ico.gov.uk/, though they
expect the internal review to be carried out before receiving a complaint
directly.
The provision of information by the LSE under the Freedom of Information
Act 2000 does not imply a right to copy, reproduce publish or otherwise
use such information. Copying or reproducing such information in any way
either in whole or in part without prior written consent may be an
infringement of copyright or other intellectual property right belonging
to the LSE or a third party.
Best Wishes,
Paul
