Dear FOI,

Thank-you very much for your original reply. I am writing to request clarification on the data you have sent to me. What is the exact meaning of a 'Y' in the 'Applicant Accepted' column, and what does it preclude? For instance, if there is not a 'Y' next to a particular applicant, might they have rejected an offer, or is it necessarily the case that they did not receive one?

Yours sincerely,

Nathaniel Branden

FOI, University of Cambridge

Dear Mr Branden,

For the purposes of your request, the University defined 'successful' as those who were accepted for study at the University having received an unconditional offer or having met the terms of a conditional offer following the Confirmation period. Any student who received a conditional offer but did not meet the terms of the offer, and as a result was not accepted for study at the University, is not included in this category.

Dear FOI,

So how would a candidate who was offered a place, but turned it down for another institution be classified?

Yours sincerely,

Nathaniel Branden

FOI, University of Cambridge

Dear Mr Branden,

Such individuals - assuming that the offer either was unconditional or was conditional and the conditions were met - also would be classed as 'successful' applicants (and would have a 'Y' in the relevant column). There are very typically very few such individuals in each year.
