Dear Department for Transport,
I would like to know the total amount of public money spent on running and developing the railways each year between 1980 (or as far back as you can provide if 1980 is too long ago) and 2015.
Please provide a simple table with year, running and development columns preferably in ODS or CSV format. Please also provide a list of categories of items which have been included in each of the running and development groups.
Examples of things I consider running costs:
* Staffing, maintenance etc. of stations, tracks, administration, office spaces etc.
* Maintenance of locomotives, rolling stock etc.
Examples of things I consider developing the railways:
* Upgrades of stations, tracks, bridges, tunnels and other infrastructure.
* Construction of new stations, tracks, bridges, tunnels and other infrastructure.
* Purchase of new locomotives, rolling stock etc.
Dear Mr Gauld,
I am writing to acknowledge receipt of your request for information which
has been allocated reference number P0015522.
A response will be issued to you in due course.
