Dear Mr Rashid,
Thank you for your email to Ards and North Down Borough Council of 25 March 2021.
Your request regarding acid tar lagoons/sites will be processed in accordance with the Environmental Information Regulations 2004. While the Environmental Information Regulations require the Council to respond within 20 working days of the date of receipt of your request, please note that this may not be possible as the Council's resources may be diverted away from information rights work during the COVID-19 pandemic.
You will receive the information you have requested unless the Council does not hold the information or there is a reason to withhold all or part of the information requested. Council will write to you in any event.

Dear Mr Rashid,
We refer to the above and write further to our acknowledgement email of 29 March 2021.
Your information request in relation to acid tar lagoons / sites has been processed by Ards and North Down Borough Council in accordance with the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 and please see Council’s response below.
The Council does not hold a register of contaminated land as Part 3 of the Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order 1997 was never invoked/implemented in Northern Ireland. The Council does refer to a then Department of Environment survey in 1998 (incomplete) when commenting on Planning applications. From local historical knowledge, potential sites may be at former gas work sites in each of the towns, however.
Should you require clarification on any part of this response, please do not hesitate to contact us.
We are sorry we could not be of more assistance in this matter. Should you be unhappy with the response you may request an Internal Review by contacting [Ards and North Down Borough Council request email]. Please note that requests for Internal Reviews must be submitted within two months from the date of this response. Further information on the Internal Review process is available on the Council’s website. In the event you are unhappy with the outcome of any Internal Review conducted by Council you may apply to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) for a review of our response. Please note that the ICO generally expects Internal Reviews to be completed prior to reviewing the decisions of public bodies.
