Accommodation support for prisoners

The request was partially successful.

29 November 2009

Dear Sir or Madam,

I have been searching HM prisons website for some information but
have been unable to locate the correct data, there for under the
Freedom of Information Act I would like the following most recent
information about Her Majesty’s Prisons in England and Wales.

The information provided does not have to include contracted out prisons but I would like to know if the information sent does or doesn’t include them. If possible the total information about prisoners (Male, Female and young offenders) would be helpful but if this information is harder to gather then just covering Male adult inmates would be enough to answer my questions.

1) The number of prisoners entering the prison service homeless and from temporary accommodation (such as hostels).

2) The number of prisoners leaving prison without an address and those released without stable accommodation to go to

3) I would like to know what housing related support prisoners are entitled to/provided with both during their sentence and after release by the Probation Service and information on what prisoners can expect in terms of housing related support

These are the questions I would like answered under the Freedom
of Information Act. Please can you acknowledge receipt of this
email so I know there was not a problem in
sending this request. I would also hope you are able to give me a
full reply to my questions within 20 days as required by law, or
ask for clarification / explain why there is a problem with my
request in that time. Thank you in advance for your help.

Yours faithfully,

Miss P Druett

Dear Miss P Druett,

SUBJECT: Freedom of Information Request

Thank you for your correspondence of November 29, 2009, in which you
asked for information about prisoners accommodation before and after
release under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) from the
Ministry of Justice (MoJ).

You will receive a response from us by December 30, 2009. Your request
has been passed to the appropriate business unit within the MoJ, and
they will write to you with their decision by this date.

The FOIA does provide a number of exemptions. A qualified exemption
requires that before relying on it we must consider the public interest
test. If the information you have requested is covered by a qualified
exemption(s) under FOIA, the Department is allowed to take longer than
20 working days to respond. This is because in such circumstances we are
required to consider the public interest issues when deciding whether or
not to disclose the information requested.

If more time is needed to consider the public interest issues under a
qualified exemption(s), we will write to you and inform you of the
revised date you can expect to receive a response to your request.

If you have any queries regarding this request please do not hesitate to
contact us. Please quote ref: FOI/62388/09 in all future correspondence.

Yours sincerely,
