Access and Outreach Data
Dear St John's College, Oxford,
I write to request information regarding your College Access and Outreach policy. I am seeking information on funding and events by your College Access and Outreach team over the past three years (2017, 2018, 2019). I would like to know:
1. The annual Access and Outreach budget
2. The number of events* held in the College’s Link Area
3. The number of tours given to schools from the College Link Area
4. The proportion of tours given to state schools within your Link Area, versus independent schools in your Link Area
5. The number of events* held in areas outside the College Link Area
6. The number of tours given to schools outside of the College Link Area
7. The proportion of tours given to state schools outside your Link Area, versus independent schools outside your Link Area
For the above requests, please provide information for the past 3 years (2017, 2018, 2019).
Given the broad nature of this request, I am happy for the College to provide as much information as the time limit allows, including estimates and general college policy where it would help answer these questions.
*Events refers to school visits, conferences, or any formal access work.
Yours faithfully,
Florence Toone
Dear Ms Toone,
I confirm receipt of your FOI request and write to seek clarification which region of the country you are referring to under each of the link areas mentioned below (link area 3, 4, 5, etc).
We have not seen link areas identified in this way and are therefore unsure what information to provide.
Many thanks,
Iris Burke

Dear St John's Bursary Manager,
According to the ox.ac.uk website, each college is assigned a particular 'Link Area' as a means of ensuring that "all areas of the UK are fully supported by the University of Oxford". In the case of St John's College, the Link Area includes the regions of:
- Brighton and Hove
- Ealing
- East Sussex
- Harrow
- West Sussex
The information I am requesting in relation to Link Areas therefore pertains to these regions listed above.
For example, for point 2, I ask for the number of outreach events the college held in all 5 of the above regions, for each of the years 2017, 2018, and 2019. For point 5, I ask for the number of events college held in all areas of the UK outside of the aforementioned regions that the college is linked with. I hope this clarifies my request.
Yours sincerely,
Florence Toone
Thank you for the clarification.
I think the confusion arose from the way your original request was
formatted. It looked as if you were referring to school link areas by
numbers, but I can see now that these are the actual numbered questions.
1. The annual Access and Outreach budget 2. The number of events* held in
the College’s Link Area 3. The number of tours given to schools from the
College Link Area 4. The proportion of tours given to state schools within
your Link Area, versus independent schools in your Link Area 5. The number
of events* held in areas outside the College Link Area 6. The number of
tours given to schools outside of the College Link Area 7. The proportion
of tours given to state schools outside your Link Area, versus independent
schools outside your Link Area
We will get back to you with a reply soon.

Dear St John's Bursary Manager,
For the responses to numbers 2-7, may I ask what year the data pertains to ? In the original request I asked that all information may be provided for the years 2017, 2018 and 2019.
Yours sincerely,
Florence Toone
Dear Florence Toon,
The responses to questions 2-7 are the combined data for the calendar years 2017, 2018 and 2019.
I hope this clarifies matters.
