Dear Mr Lovell,

Please find the below in response to your Freedom of Information request
dated 17^th November 2020.

Do you as a default routinely use Local Anaesthetic for pain relief
/Analgesic for ABG/CBG procedures, if not why not? Sussex Community NHS
Foundation Trust does not routinely use Local Anaesthetic for pain relief
for CBG procedures. This is because Capillary blood gas sampling is less
invasive and less painful compared to that of the Arterial blood gas
assessment,  and therefore we do not use any analgesic.

Please note that Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust is a Community
Healthcare Provider and not an Acute NHS Trust. As such, we do not provide
or manage ABG procedures, and therefore this information is not held by
our organisation. It is likely that ABG procedures are managed by Acute
NHS Trusts. Please find below contact details for the Acute NHS Trusts in

Dear Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust,

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.

I am writing to request an internal review of Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust's handling of my FOI request 'ABG/CBG Using Local Anaesthetic'.
https://www.sussexcommunity.nhs.uk/servi...
If you use the link above it shows the COPD service provided by yourselves and to obtain a true oxygen reading you HAVE to use an ABG test.
So please stop prevaricating and provide the information asked for and contact the COPD unit that you provide for advice.

Dear Mr Lovell,

Please find the below in response to your request for an internal review
dated 18^th December 2020.

Following the review panel, it was confirmed that the original response
was accurate. The panel concluded that further context should be provided
to clarify the services provided by SCFT and the processes that are in
place.

Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT) has COPD services, however
within these services Arterial blood gas assessments are not undertaken.
As our SCFT services are provided within the community settings (rather
than acute hospital settings), we follow the attached protocol to
undertake Capillary blood gas assessments (CBG) as this has less risks
associated with it and is more practical within community settings.
Capillary blood gas assessment is less invasive, less painful and provides
comparable results to Arterial blood gas assessment.  Additionally
Capillary blood gas sampling is less painful and there is no need to use
any analgesic.

Yours sincerely,

Freedom of Information Lead
Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust
