Abestos in the Blaydon housing stock, sheds & garages.

The request was partially successful.

Dear Gateshead Housing Company,
What is the number of council homes in the Blaydon area? How many of those homes are known to have asbestos?

What has been done in the past 10 years to monitor friability of asbestos in these council homes and the likely effects on the long term health and safety of tenants and others exposed to the asbestos? How were the tenants informed of the asbestos and how to avoid contamination of themselves and family? What plans are in place to safely remove the asbestos?

How many council owned garages and sheds are there in the Blaydon area? How many of these have asbestos roofs and of these how many are in a friable state? When were the last inspections to these roofs made? What plans are in place for their safe replacement?

Thanks in advance for your replies. Hope you guys remain safe, your work is appreciated.

Yours faithfully,

John S Park

Dear Mr John Spark,

With reference to your request dated 17 May 2020 under Freedom Of
Information Act 2000 with regard to Asbestos in the Blaydon housing stock,
sheds & garages, please see our response against your queries below :

o What is the number of council homes in the Blaydon area?

There are 1547 council owned homes.

o How many of those homes are known to have asbestos?

Most properties built prior to 2000 will have asbestos
containing materials (ACMS).

o What has been done in the past 10 years to monitor friability of
asbestos in these council homes and the likely effects on the long
term health and safety of tenants and others exposed to the asbestos?

Provided it is not interfered with asbestos does not pose a
risk under normal circumstances. Prior to carrying out works in domestic
premises we undertake asbestos surveys. Where required actions are taken

to make asbestos containing materials safe prior to the
works taking place.

o How were the tenants informed of the asbestos and how to avoid
contamination of themselves and family?

Under the tenancy agreement tenants are required to request
permission prior to any refurbishment works. This allows us to review
asbestos data prior to authorising any works which may lead to disturbance

of ACMS and release of fibres.

o How many council owned garages and sheds are there in the Blaydon
area?

There are 434 council owned garages.

o How many of these have asbestos roofs and of these how many are in a
friable state?

There are no known asbestos garage roofs in the Blaydon
area.

o When were the last inspections to these roofs made?

The most recent inspections took place in April 2019.

o What plans are in place for their safe replacement?

If TGHC are undertaking works on the garages and asbestos is
identified in the area of works it would be removed or made safe by
competent contractors prior to works.
