Freedom of Information, University of Leeds

Dear John Dimitroulopoulos,

Freedom of Information request reference K/20/037

Thank you for your Freedom of Information (FOI) request dated 18 January
2020, reference K/20/037.

Your request read:

“I would like to request the following information about your single
honours law course (please exclude any data on joint honours law courses
from your reply).

1.    The number of students who enrolled in 2019.

2.    A complete, anonymised list of the A-level results achieved by each
of the students who enrolled in 2019. Please break this down by student
(e.g. Candidate 1 got A*AA, Candidate 2 got AAA, etc.)

3.    A complete, anonymised list of the IB total points achieved by each
of the students who enrolled in 2019. Please break this down by student
(e.g. Candidate 1 got 35 points out of 45, Candidate 2 got 38 points out
of 45, etc.)”

The University of Leeds holds this information. For your convenience we
have responded to each of your questions in turn below.

1.    The number of students who enrolled in 2019.

380 students enrolled in LLB Law in 2019.

2.    A complete, anonymised list of the A-level results achieved by each
of the students who enrolled in 2019. Please break this down by student
(e.g. Candidate 1 got A*AA, Candidate 2 got AAA, etc.)

Please note that based on question one, we have interpreted the remainder
of your request to relate only to entrants who enrolled in 2019.

Please find below a table setting out the A-level results achieved by
students, and the total number of students achieving that combination of
results. Please note that these are the results recorded on the
University’s Student Information System, and are not necessarily the
qualifications on which entry to the course was based.

+----------------------------------+
|Grades |Count |
|-----------------+----------------|
|AAB |26 |
|-----------------+----------------|
|AAA* |24 |
|-----------------+----------------|
|AAA |20 |
|-----------------+----------------|
|ABB |13 |
|-----------------+----------------|
|AA*B |12 |
|-----------------+----------------|
|AAAP |7 |
+----------------------------------+

Where the total number of students who achieved a particular grade
combination is less than or equal to five, we are withholding the total
figure under section 40(2) of the FOI Act.

Section 40(2) sets out that information is exempt from disclosure if it is
the personal data of someone other than the person making the request, and
disclosure would; contravene the data protection principles; contravene an
objection to processing; or if the data is exempt from the right of
subject access. We consider that the release of this information would be
likely to lead to the identification of individuals, and would therefore
reveal information regarding their academic attainment. This would be
unfair and would therefore breach their data protection rights.

The following grade combinations were achieved by five or fewer students:

+----------------------------------+
|A |AA |AA*A* |A*A*A*|AAA*A* |
|-----+------+------+------+-------|
|AA* |A*B |AA*AP |AA*PAP|AAPAP |
|-----+------+------+------+-------|
|AB |A*BB |A*A*B |AABB |A*A*A*P|
|-----+------+------+------+-------|
|ABC |A*A*C |AABD |AABP |A*A*AP |
|-----+------+------+------+-------|
|BBB |A*APB |A*APBB|A*APBC|A*APBP |
|-----+------+------+------+-------|
|A*BBC|AA*BP |AAC |ABCD |APAPB |
|-----+------+------+------+-------|
|BBC |AABBCE|AAPBP |BDD |CCC |
+----------------------------------+

3.    A complete, anonymised list of the IB total points achieved by each
of the students who enrolled in 2019. Please break this down by student
(e.g. Candidate 1 got 35 points out of 45, Candidate 2 got 38 points out
of 45, etc.)

As outlined above, we consider a per-student breakdown to be exempt under
section 40(2) of the FOI Act. As such, we have provided a list of IB
scores recorded on the University’s Student Information System. In this
case, all score totals were achieved by five or fewer students:

+-----------+
|39 |
|-----------|
|37 |
|-----------|
|36 |
|-----------|
|35 |
