I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information request dated 5
September 2020.

For ease of reference, I have reproduced your questions below and set out
our corresponding responses.

Could you please confirm the GCSE points score required to be invited for
interview for your A100 course for 2020 entry, please?

Details of the entry requirements, interview and selection process for our
Medicine (MBBCh) programme, including GCSE academic requirements, can be

The first stage of our admissions process is to assess achieved
qualifications therefore the GCSE’s and equivalent qualifications have the
most important weighting.  We score the minimum entry requirements first,
and then take the top grades from the rest of the GCSE subjects to give a
total of 9 GCSE’s.  These GCSE’s are then scored and applicants are
awarded 3 points for an A*/9,8, 2 points for an A/7, and 1 point for a
B/6.

Those who meet or exceed the minimum academic threshold will then be
ranked and a cut-off point determined to proceed to consideration of the
non-academic criteria.

The cut off score for A100 applicants for the past 4 cycles has ranged
between 20 and 27 depending on whether applicants were in a contextualised
category under the Cardiff University contextualised admissions policy.

Can you also confirm what method was used to discriminate between
applicants where you had too many on the same score to invite for
interview, please?  I understand the PS is reviewed, but assuming this is
satisfactory, what aspect of an application is used to decide who receives
an invite and who is rejected in a tie-breaker situation and what score
was needed in this element to be successful? Admissions Team members have
stated in your online Open Day that UCAT was used in this scenario. Can
you confirm this is the case, and if so, what score was needed to achieve
an interview. If this is not the case, can you detail what criteria were
used, how they were scored and what score was needed to achieve an
interview.

Applicants who meet the minimum academic requirements and are sufficiently
highly ranked academically are assessed on non-academic criteria according
to the information in their personal statement and the referee’s report
given on the UCAS application form. Non-academic requirements will also be
assessed at any potential interview. Applications are reviewed by trained
selectors and the following are assessed:

·         Medical motivation and awareness of the career

·         Caring ethos and a sense of social awareness

·         Sense of responsibility

·         Evidence of a balanced approach to life

·         Evidence of self-directed learning and extracurricular
activities

·         Referee’s report
