Dear Mr Ferreira,

Thank you for your recent Freedom of Information request.

Please find below the College's response to your questions:

1) The number of GCSEs each applicant applied with, and itemised grades
(e.g. 3A*s 4As 1B)

GCSE grades are provided to the College in the UCAS application forms,
however the data submitted is not verified by the College and as a result
it may be incomplete.

Additionally, the data is not transferred from the UCAS application forms
to the College records system. Therefore, to provide this information
would require manually checking each individual UCAS form that was
submitted for 2017 entry and then analysing the results to determine the
number of GCSEs and the grades achieved.  Therefore, the location,
extraction and collation of the data requested would exceed the
appropriate limit. This information is therefore exempt from disclosure
under section 12(1) of the Freedom of Information Act. Section 12 states
that “Section 1 (1) does not oblige a public authority to comply with a
request for information if the authority estimates that the cost of
complying with the request would exceed the appropriate limit (under the
Freedom of Information and Data Protection (Appropriate Limit and Fees)
Regulations 2004).”  The appropriate limit is set at 18 hours.

2) The predicted and achieved grades in A-levels

Please see Tables 1 and 2 in the attached spreadsheet.

The predicted and achieved A-Levels at the point of application have been
combined. If reported separately, anyone who was predicted/ had already
achieved fewer than 3 A-Levels would be excluded from the data, for
example if candidates had sat one or more A-Level’s early and were still
studying for an additional two A levels at the point of application, they
would not be included. Additionally, for a candidate who had sat one A
level but was taking three more at the point of application, only the A
levels that the candidate was taking would be recorded, leading to
incorrect information about the applicant’s full academic profile. When
assessing an applicant’s A levels, all achieved and pending grades are
taken into consideration. The data therefore shows the applicants’
academic profile at the time their application was made.

Data regarding the predicated and achieved A-Level grades where the number
of applicants was five or fewer has been withheld on data protection
grounds. Even if just the number of applicants was redacted, individuals
may still be identifiable from the combination of grades. This information
is therefore exempt from disclosure under Section 40 (2) of the Freedom of
Information Act, which states that "any information to which a request for
information relates is also exempt information if - (a) it constitutes
personal data."

The predicted practical grades for science subject A levels have not been
included as this data is not always provided at the point of application
which would result in the data being incomplete.

3) The type of school the applicant attended (i.e. State Maintained (and
Grammar itemised separately), Independent etc.) at the time of GCSEs and
then A-levels.

Please see Table 3 in the attached spreadsheet.

The College only holds information regarding the type of school through
which the applicant made their application. Data is not held regarding
applicants’ school types at the time of their GCSEs.

Figures of five or fewer have been replaced with an asterisk. This is
because individuals may otherwise be identifiable from the data provided.
This information is therefore exempt from disclosure under Section 40 (2)
of the Freedom of Information Act, which states that "any information to
which a request for information relates is also exempt information if -
(a) it constitutes personal data."

Where the number of applicants from a particular school type is five or
fewer, and as a result giving just the school type with the figure
redacted could still lead to individuals being identifiable, this data has
also been withheld in its entirety for data protection purposes, as
explained above.

4) The 'contextual score' assigned to each applicant to show
under/over-performance contextually.

The College does not assign a contextual score to applicants. The College
uses its own criteria to determine whether an applicant is from a Widening
Participation background.

5) Whether the applicant qualified for 'extenuating circumstances'.

To ascertain which applicants qualified for extenuating circumstances
would involve manually reviewing all of the applications. Therefore, the
location, extraction and collation of the data requested would exceed the
appropriate limit.

6) The BMAT scores in each section.

Please see Table 4 in the attached spreadsheet, which shows the average
BMAT scores in each section for all applicants who took the BMAT, those
who received an offer and those whose place was confirmed.

7) The outcome of application and college allocated to.

Please see Table 3, which shows the number of offers made and the number
of places confirmed. Table 2 also shows the number of candidates (and
their predicted and achieved A-Level grades) that received an offer.

8) If rejected, a generalised reason as to why.

Please see Table 5.

Generalised reasons for rejection have been provided where available.
