RE: FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000 – INFORMATION REQUEST - REF: D10682
Please find our Trust’s response in relation to your request for information under the Freedom of
Information Act.
I write requesting access to the following information under section 1(1) of the Freedom of
Information Act 2000:
1. All policies and procedures which relate to the use of force on patients and service users
within your trust.
Please see attached documents.
2. Name and contact details for the 'responsible person' as required of you in accordance with
the Mental Health Units (Use of Force) Act 2018.

3. Details of any use of force used by or on behalf of the trust between Sep 2016 and Sep 2022
including type of restraint used (physical, mechanical or chemical), duration of restraint and
the number of staff involved in such restraints.
Data relating to restrictive interventions is published by NHS Digital and is available here:

monthly-statistics/ NHS Digital have published this data since November 2021, and it includes type of restraint
and duration of restraint.
Due to a change in our Trust reporting systems in Q2 2021, we are unable to provide the
requested figures for the period September 2016 to October 2021 due to the manual review

that would be required. To locate and collate these incidents would require a member of staff
to review each record to confirm whether it was relevant. This would take more than the
appropriate limit of 18 staffing hours and therefore it has been decided that this information is
subject to an exemption in accordance with
Section 12 (1) of the Freedom of Information Act –
the cost of compliance exceeds the appropriate limit.
