Thank you for your email of 18 October, I apologise for the delayed
response.  Your request has been considered to be a request for
information in accordance with the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act 2000. 
You initially asked:

total cost of all subsidised service magazines please.

Following discussion with FOI officers at SPVA you clarified your question
on 23 October to refer to:

All service magazines that are subsidised by the State please

A central audit and cost savings exercise was conducted in 2010 into the
costs of magazines and newsletters that are subsidised by the Ministry of
Defence.  It identified all publications where duties to produce the
publication made up 50% or more of a Defence employee’s full time job. 
The results of this survey have been used to form this response.  The
annual cost of all publications intended to be read by Service or MOD
civilians audiences were as follows:

Total (net) external production costs: £236,329

Total staff costs: £1,962,093

Total costs: £2,198,422

The net figure given above indicates the final cost to the taxpayer after
any incomes generated have been deducted – for example advertising
income.  The figures encompass a range of magazines aimed at the hugely
diverse population of Service personnel from all three Services and MOD
civilian workers including those serving on operations, those based in
Germany and Cyprus (and their families), Gurkhas, specialist trades,
cadets and reservists. Each magazine aims to ensure that its audience is
kept up to date with developments and news from their Service and across
Defence whilst also contributing to maintaining morale and the fighting
capability of our Armed Forces' personnel.

The magazines included in the cost figures range from simple newsletters
published on an annual basis to comprehensive Service magazines such as
Navy News, Soldier (British Army) and RAF News.

 

If you are not satisfied with this response or you wish to complain about
any aspect of the handling of your request, then you should contact me in
the first instance. If informal resolution is not possible and you are
still dissatisfied then you may apply for an independent internal review
by contacting the Head of Corporate Information, 6th Floor, MOD Main
Building, Whitehall, SW1A 2HB (e-mail [1][email address]). Please note
that any request for an internal review must be made within 40 working
days of the date on which the attempt to reach informal resolution has
come to an end.

If you remain dissatisfied following an internal review, you may take your
complaint to the Information Commissioner under the provisions of Section
50 of the Freedom of Information Act. Please note that the Information
Commissioner will not investigate your case until the MOD internal review
